Agricultural Technology And Marketing
USAID is working to increase the availability of environmentally sound agricultural technologies and marketing services to cooperatives, producer groups, and low-income small- and medium-sized farmers. In addition, t raining provided to eight secondary rural organizations will help this type of assistance to their member organizations and individual farmers in the near future and help these secondary organizations become self-sustainable. Thus, farmers will have greater access to technical assistance in environmentally sound farming practices, and secondary organizations will continue to provide such assistance beyond the life of this program. Promotion of High-Value Alternative Crops Traditionally, small farmers growing basic grains (e.g., corn, beans, rice, sorghum) practice subsistence agriculture, producing little surplus crops and making small profits. In contrast, growing non-traditional crops offers an opportunity to increase farmers’ income and provide a hedge against inherent weather-related risks.

Quality agricultural training and supporting curriculum is provided to thousands of educators as they learn to use these concepts as a tool when teaching subjects such as science, math, language arts and history.
    AITC Inservice Workshops
Ag in the Classroom workshops are popular, hands-on training for PreK-12 educators. The training infuses agriculture, science and technology into classrooms statewide, and remains the cornerstone of MAEF's educational programs. The Ag in the Classroom Summer Workshop is a five-day intensive program where primary teachers are trained to use new and innovative projects focusing on agriculture to teach math, science, language arts, history and the environment in their classrooms. Each teacher receives extensive hands-on activities, curriculum, videos, CD's, and models for the classroom to excite students about the learning process while learning about agriculture. The one-day AITC Spring Workshop is held at the Maryland Department of Agriculture in Annapolis, and offers additional curriculum material and an opportunity to exchange ideas with active AITC PreK-12 educators.

    Agricultural Genetics

India has made tremendous strides in agriculture development. In part this has been due to the introduction of high yielding crop varieties, use of modern agricultural methods, including crop protection, and the establishment of a highly competent and nation - wide agricultural education system to name just a few.
IGovernment policies and international research and development agencies, which targets support of small farmers and landowners, have also played a significant role in India`s progrees in this field.
The recent advances in molecular biology are now pushing agricultural genetic research into new and potentially profound new directions. The technologies emerging from this new research can be extremely valuable for developing countries and for resource poor farmers.
Untill now India has played only a minor role in these developments. Harnessing this research and these technologies for the benefit of the Indian agricultural community requires support for the development of new skills and new infrastructure.
The S M Sehgal Foundation therefore intends to fund genetic research aimed at crop improvement involving the latest and cutting edge technologies.

Agricultural Education majors choose between two options of study. The teaching option prepares students to teach agriculture in Missouri's public schools. The employment outlook is excellent for Agricultural Education graduates. Public schools in Missouri and several other states are experiencing a shortage of high school agriculture teachers and FFA advisors. The leadership and communication option provides students with a diverse knowledge of agriculture and a strong background in communications and human relation skills. Students in the leadership and communication option have the opportunity to create a specialized course of study in an agricultural field.
