Agricultural Careers (AG)
The Agricultural Careers program provides instruction for those wishing training, retraining, or skills upgrading in the field of agriculture and for those wishing to transfer to a four year college or university. Diverse learning activities are provided at facilities both on Maui and Moloka`i. The Maui facility includes a 10,700 square foot greenhouse, 2 acres of turfgrass including a golf green, fairway and rough, and a 1.5 acre vegetable field. The Moloka`i facility includes a 5,000 square foot greenhouse, orchards, and vegetable fields on 28 acres of land. Projections point to a continued need for well-trained people in all aspects of the green industry. Hotels and condominiums face increasing demands for personnel to design and maintain aesthetically pleasing landscapes. Golf course and recreational facilities require knowledgeable people to establish and maintain healthy turfgrass in an environmentally sound manner. Farms and plantations will need informed individuals to implement new technologies and sustainable agriculture techniques. Numerous opportunities exist for entrepreneurs in vegetable, flower, and nursery crop production as well as landscape maintenance. Agriculture courses have been articulated with the University of Hawai`i at Hilo. Students can transfer to that institution after beginning their academic and technical training on Maui or Moloka`i. Some courses are equivalent to those offered by that institution while other courses transfer as agriculture or general electives. Some courses will also meet program requirements in agriculture at the University of Hawai`i at Manoa and transfer to mainland institutions. See your counselor or agriculture advisor for details.

Certificates and Degrees
Maui Community College offers several certificates and degrees. These credentials differ in the number and type of courses required for completion and in the minimum length of time required to fulfill all requirements. A Certificate of Completion generally requires one semester to complete, whereas a Certificate of Achievement may generally be completed in one year. Associate degrees may be completed in two years with full-time attendance. Full-time attendance is not practical for many students and each year a high percentage of students planning to complete a certificate or degree program attend Maui Community College part-time. Part-time students require more than the minimum length of time to fulfill all program requirements. Some students do not wish to pursue a certificate or degree program and select courses according to their own personal interests or occupational needs. Program requirements are described in the following sections for those students who wish to earn a particular certificate or degree.

Admissions Special Programs General Studies
The opportunity to develop an independent major in General Studies is available for students interested in pursuing a general education in Agriculture and Life Sciences. In consultation with a faculty adviser, they may plan a sequence of courses suited to their individual interests, abilities, and objectives in an area not encompassed by the existing programs. In addition to the distribution and other college requirements, this major may include a concentration of courses in one of several academic units of the college or university. Students completing this major are often planning a career in agriculture related food and service enterprises. Many of the fast-growing occupations require the broad perspective, the scientific and technical skills, the attitudes, and the analytical ability that a general education fosters. A course of study for a special program must be planned with and approved by a college faculty adviser. Information on the options and names of faculty advisers prepared to advise in special programs are available in the Counseling and Advising Office, 140 Roberts Hall.
