Plant Protection Major
Program Description
Plant protection is the management of insects, weeds, and diseases that affect agronomic and horticultural crops, reducing their productivity or aesthetic value. This interdepartmental major captures important concepts and practices from entomology, plant pathology and weed sciences within the context of biological interactions in natural and managed ecosystems easing food demands for a larger world population, protection of people and environments, and changing crop production philosophies make effective management of pests a critical career field for the future.
New Major
The Plant Protection major is designed to train practicing professionals who are directly involved with pest management, who consult and advise others in management practices, or who work with businesses that are impacted by pest problems Supporting course work within the major offers specialized training in either agronomic or horticultural crop production and protection. General education courses provide important background so that graduates of the program can be informed, contributing members of their communities.
Careers
The plant protection curriculum was developed in consultation with practicing professionals who understand the needs and demands of their professions. Many of these practicing professionals will employ graduates of the program. Employment opportunities are excellent and include jobs with private agribusinesses, extension, consulting companies and with local, national, and international governmental agencies. The curriculum is also designed to encourage entrepreneurs who wish to establish businesses in their local communities. A required paid summer internship provides relevant on-thejob experience and professional contacts which are important in employment searches. Graduates of the program will have completed most of the requirements for ARCPACS national certification. Since the Plant Protection faculty maintain a continuing dialogue with practicing professionals, they can assist in job searches and placement.

Career Advisor: P. J. Kennelly (231-6315) Undergraduate Coordinator: T. O. Sitz (231-6315) The bachelor of science in biochemistry is designed to provide students with a thorough foundation in chemistry and biology and an appreciation of how these sciences are integrated. The plan of study prepares students for careers in medical, veterinary, agricultural, industrial biochemistry, or biotechnology. In addition, it provides the background for post-graduate studies in the life sciences or professional studies in medicine (including nursing), veterinary medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, or clinical chemistry. Two undergraduate programs are administered by the department, one in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (BCHM) and the other in the College of Arts and Sciences (BioC). Biochemistry majors must meet the core curriculum requirements of the college in which they are enrolled. These requirements differ between the colleges. The departmental requirements for majors in either college are as follows: mathematics (9-12 credits), physics (8 credits), principles of biology (8 credits), genetics (3 credits), general microbiology (4 credits), general chemistry (8 credits), organic chemistry (8 credits), physical chemistry (6 credits), analytical chemistry (4 credits), introduction to biochemistry (1 credit), organic biochemistry (1 credit), general biochemistry (7 credits), and laboratory problems in biochemistry and molecular biology (6 credits). General Education Theme Options
General Education theme options are sets of GE courses sharing a common intellectual theme. These GE theme options are not a separate element of the GE requirement, but a way of selecting your GE courses so that you may benefit from a coherent focus of study while completing the GE requirement. Completion of a theme satisfies the GE requirement for students with majors assigned to the GE topical breadth area of Arts and Humanities. Students with majors assigned to the topical breadth area of either Science and Engineering or Social Science will need to complete additional GE courses in Arts and Humanities to satisfy the campus GE requirement.
Global Population and Environmental Issues
For centuries, there have been concerns and predictions about population growth and its potential effects on the environment and the quality of life. Perspectives on population and environmental issues often vary based on such factors as gender, social class, culture, nation, race/ethnicity, and religion. In this group of courses, students will learn about the complex interplay among environmental, economic, and ethical issues through the study of global population patterns. They will learn how science addresses the use of natural resources by humans, along with the fundamentals of environmental impacts such as global warming. This option group of courses explores diverse perspectives on global population and environmental issues by examining biological, physical, and social processes that influence the everyday lives of people around the world.

General Information for Pre-Medical Students
I. Undergraduate Major
All medical schools recognize the importance of a broad education - but they don't require a particular undergraduate premedical major.
They do require a strong foundation in natural sciences (biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics) and a solid background in social sciences and humanities. Because medical schools want a mix of students with diverse backgrounds, you should choose the undergraduate major that fits your interests and abilities. However, within that major, you must
  • earn strong grades, take demanding courses, and pursue a well-rounded curriculum.
II. Required Courses Nearly all medical schools require a core four or five courses that you can get at Purdue (see below).
Requirements Purdue Equivalents One year of biology (with laboratory) BIOL 110-111 or BIOL 131-132 and 231-232 One year general chemistry (with laboratory) CHM 115-116 or CHM 125-126 or CHM 123-124 One year of organic chemistry (with laboratory) One year of physics (with laboratory)

TAFE: Apprenticeship / Traineeship Training Program (ATTP)
Purpose of the program
Employers receive wage subsidies and other benefits as an encouragement to recruit new staff. Employees receive quality training, and earn a nationally recognised qualification as a basis for advancement in the industry. On completion of their traineeship, many have been able to successfully move into positions of responsibility. Overall, the program has provided the impetus for industry to improve both its productivity and profitability.
How does the program operate?
Under the Apprenticeship / Traineeship Training Program, employers:
  • Recruit the trainee - the choice is theirs. They choose the trainee they feel is right for their business. Family members may be eligible also. Sometimes Group Training Companies act on behalf of farmers as the employer thereby assisting to reduce the "paperwork" involved.
Select a training provider - training providers such as ILFR are called "Registered Training Organisations" (RTOs) and assist with the development of a training program that suits both the enterprise and the trainee.

On the attainment of the full Faculty status in 1961, the DTA programme was replaced by a 3-year general degree programme; however, this was upgraded in 1968 to the current 4-year Honours B.Sc.Degree programme. The first postgraduate student was admitted to the Faculty in 1968 and graduated in 1970. The Master of Agriculture is a practitioner degree for individuals directly involved in agriculture and related industries. Because existing graduate degrees are targeted toward research and are primarily campus-based programs, the Master of Agriculture will address the advanced educational needs of individuals currently working in agricultural fields. The degree program may be completed entirely while in residence at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus, entirely by distance education at a site remote to the UNL campus or by combining residence and distance courses. Not all potential areas of study may be available on a distance basis. top Who Should Consider a Master of Agriculture Degree?
