Search: Category Description:
Permaculture is an integrated design system for sustainability. The word "permaculture" is a contraction of "permanent agriculture" or "permanent culture." Its roots are in the design of productive ecosystems for farms and gardens. A central theme in permaculture is the design of ecological landscapes that produce food. Emphasis is placed on multi-use plants, cultural practices such as sheet mulching and trellising, and the integration of animals to recycle nutrients and graze weeds. Permaculture concepts also reach beyond farming and gardens that into designs for all types of resilient, sustainable structures, both physical and social. It is a philosophy of maximum effort at the design stage to allow minimum effort and side-effects once the system is running, instead of the conventional method which is often the reverse. Welcome to the Department of Animal Sciences
Colorado State University. PROGRAM STRENGTHS Animal Sciences has been the major area of study at Colorado State University for a number of years. Animal agriculture in the state is nearly a $2 billion industry, and Colorado is a gathering place for national and international organizations. Undergraduate students are offered both an industry and and science concentration with a double major in Agricultural Business available as well. Alumni hold responsible positions around the country, with three of the last twelve President's of the National Cattleman's Beef Association being Colorado State graduates. The Monfort Endowed Professorship, the Center for Genetic Evaluation of Livestock, the Beef Industry Leadership program, the Center for Red Meat Safety, and many other strengths make Colorado State University the place to study Animal Science. The new $8.5 million Livestock Teaching and Research Center completed in early 2000 has expanded the ability of the department to assure a meaningful and contemporary educational experience.
