Study Halls Home Unlike in high school, university requires students to study on their own initiative. Although the classroom lectures remain the core of the university's education, the students are encouraged to assimilate knowledge in the library and other places outside the classroom.
With this purpose in mind, Meiji University offers its students study halls, which in fact are miniature libraries.
The Surugadai Campus has a study hall holding about 2,500 dictionaries, reference books, and other materials for individual users, as well as a personal computer room for individual or group use. Both rooms have long opening hours to meet the needs of all students.
Farms
The School of Agriculture maintains two experimental farms to give its students the opportunity to gain practical knowledge.
The Fujiyoshida Farm in the city of Fujiyoshida is located at an altitude of 890 m at the northeastern foot of Mt. Fuji. The forty-two-acre farm is conveniently located at a ten-minute walk from the Fujiyoshida train station on the Fuji Kyuko Line, and the Asama Jinja bus stop on the route to lake Yamanaka. The farm consists of practical laboratory buildings, administration buildings, farming equipment storehouses, cattle barns, and the Fujiyoshida Dormitory. In addition to potatoes, corn, and other vegetables, the farm also grows apples, which is unusual for this area. The livestock on the farm includes cows, pigs, and sheep.
The Honda Farm is located at an altitude of about 50 m on a hill in the town of Honda southeast to the city of Chiba, at a 10-minute walk from the Honda train station on the JR Sotobo Line. The farm, which measures sixty-four acres including its physical education facilities, consists of practical laboratory buildings, administration buildings, farming equipment storehouses, and the Honda Dormitory. This remarkable farm allows the cultivation of almost any crop.

Smokin' Doc Thurston's Greatest Hits
H. David Thurston Professor Emeritus - Department of Plant Pathology, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, 14850 ( hdt1@cornell.edu P robably no more atrocious title for a serious internet page with pictures on tropical agriculture, crops, plant diseases, and sustainable agricultural development was ever conceived, but it is "attention getting" and the title is so bad it might even be considered good. Our department photographer ( Kent Loeffler ) and his fiendishly clever assistant ( Ed Mackillop ) were the individuals that came up with the title and cover design. T his page has over 2,500 pictures on it. Kent Loeffler and Ed Mackillop were the individuals that did the hard work of scanning my slides into high resolution files (12-20 MgB) and also putting them all on CD disks as JPEGs. They also help set up this web page. I am indebted to them for their hard work and ingenuity on this project. Ken Sandlan, our department computer guru was also most helpful in this matter.
T he contents of this page consist of over 2,500 pictures, most of which I have taken in the last 50 years in various parts of the world. Many are from slides I have used in teaching courses on conventional plant pathology, tropical plant pathology, agricultural development in the tropics, sustainable development, and traditional practices of farmers in developing countries. They might be useful in your work, in your teaching, or for your edification.
