http://www.angelfire.com/ns/canadianagriculture/history.html
Without agriculture, civilization could not have existed. There wouldn’t possibly be any industries or cities, and there definitely wouldn’t be any markets or food providers. Everything has a starting point, and so did Canadian agriculture. Agriculture in general began long ago when animals were first domesticated. As for Canada, agricultural evidence shows that over 2000 years ago, natives had established successful agricultural practices in Canada and the United States. But of course, nothing starts out perfect. The crops then were very limited and it basically consisted of corn, beans and squash. However, when the Europeans arrived on Canada, seeds were introduced and many native villages began using them for planting crops. The following are time periods stating agricultural events through Canadian history. They are divided in year periods. Early European agriculture in Canada, consisted little more then gardens tended within trading forts and missions. The first real attempt to begin farming was in 1606 at a French trading post in Arcadia, Nova Scotia. As time went on, more Europeans more Europeans brought their agricultural practices to Canada, especially in the Maritimes regions. A few more skills and tools were discovered such as tilling the land by hand, use of shovels, hoes and rakes. Harvesting of crops was also improved by using scythes and sickles. Animals were then used for agricultural purposes as well such as Oxen. After all these new discoveries, the first “real” farm began in 1617 in a Quebec fur- trading post. It took 8 years to just get 6 hectares under culturvation. At that time, a lot of work had to be done to clear the land and cultivate it. By 1640’s, settlements were raising enough crops to feed themselves, and in 1660, there was a beginning of small trades and exports of grown foods.

History of Agriculture in British Columbia
The inhabitants of any area depend on the products provided by the land to survive. Agriculture in British Columbia today came with the influx of Europeans who came in search of furs and later gold. However, the utilization of the land as a source of food and domestic materials began much earlier with the hunting, gathering and processing of natural products by the aboriginal people. The dramatic development of the agricultural industry is reflected in statistics recorded over the years. In 1891, the Canadian census placed the total population of the province at 98,173. Of this, 22% (22,000 approx) were located on 6,500 farms, mostly located on Vancouver Island, the lower mainland and in the Okanagan and Kootenay valleys. One hundred years later, the 1991 census shows the past trend towards urbanization with only 1.5% (61,135) out of a total population of 3,282,060 living on farms. The total number of farms had increased to 19,225. The farm of the 1890's was more closely linked to the farm of two centuries ago, than of today. There were no cars, few telephones and little electricity. Most of the work now done by gasoline and diesel powered equipment was done by the 17,000 horses in use on British Columbia farms in 1894. Tractors first appeared in the early 20th century and by 1922 numbered 332. Today there are well over 33,000. As late as 1933, there were only 20 combines - today there are over 1700 in the province. To produce 1 acre (20 bushels) of wheat in 1890 with a gang plow, a seeder, a harrow, a binder, a thresher, and wagons and horses, took 8 to 10 man hours of labour. It has been said that to produce today's crops without fuel and electricity and with turn of the century technology would require 27 million more farm workers and 61 million more horses and mules.

Agriculture - America's Heartland
Great Bend is the Heart of Kansas and the Heart of America's rural culture. Golden fields of wheat rustle in the wind, stalks bow to the weight of heavy sweet ears of corn, huge combines work night and day during harvest-the abundance and deep roots of our agricultural heritage is visible everywhere here and visitors can learn and be a part of these heartland traditions.
Prairie people have always celebrated their connection to the land and the great gift it has given them. Every year, bright-eyed 4-H children bring their prize cucumbers, their hand-raised calves and their chocolate cakes to the Barton County Fair. The Fair retains a small-town community feel with children safely roaming the spacious grounds and adults stopping to eat delicious food and chat about local politics. But it also provides big name entertainment, a world-class carnival and midway, booth after booth of commercial offerings and displays and food that features the crops that grow so generously here. The Fair takes place in early July every year.
Nearby Ellinwood celebrates the hard work of the wheat farmers every year with the

Book source: Geschiedkundige Aanteekeningen over Suriname en Paramaribo, Fred Oudschans Dentz,De West, 1972 no ISBN Subject: [Agriculture, History] About Sugar
Article:
Unfortunately, I have not found yet books completely devoted to sugar in Suriname. Thus this post is somewhat a rambling account about sugar. In 1637, Pieter Brouwer introduced Brazilian sugar cane to Barbados and from there it made its way down to Suriname.
Sugar was very important as it was often used as currency. For instance, in 1690 one lb of sugar was equal to 2 nickels (stuivers). Letterwood (wood used in printing) was also a currency and 1 lb of sugar= 3 lbs of letterwood. In 1692 one paid with sugar to get married. The reformed church journal of 1720-1740 has entries that show that 1000 lbs of sugar equals f50 a fee necessary to marry outside the church. In 1694 one paid 20,000 lbs of sugar to be buried inside the church. 10,000 lbs was paid to be buried in the church cemetery. If the plantation owner was buried on the plantation 400 lbs of sugar was paid to the church. Children paid 200 lbs when buried on the plantation. Other people paid according to a downward sliding scale. One also paid 150 lbs of sugar to reserve a seat in church. One paid with sugar for legal document such as wills (100 lbs), a copy of a will (50 lbs), a contractual document (100 lbs).
It has been alleged by some that houses built on the Heeren and Keizersgracht in Amsterdam were built from Suriname's riches. However, no documented proof has yet shown up. It appears true that plantation owners (sugar barons) in the middle of the 18th century lived the good life. The 'good life' was of short duration as the expeditionary actions against run-away slaves became costly as well as all the defensive measures to protect the plantations with the result that Suriname slowly became a 'bottomless well' for the Dutch treasury.

The survey of the development of man and agriculture is divided into three periods
Click on the picture The pre-agricultural times
correspond to collecting, hunting and fishing. It started approximately 3 million years BP. The agricultural times
began with the development of agriculture simultaneously at six points in the world. It lasted from 10000 years BP up to the 19th century. The agro-industrial times
began in England with the industrial revolution. It lasted from the 19th century up to nowadays.
The lenght of these periods is very different
The oldest human vestiges known up to nowadays are dated 3 million years BP, agriculture started around 10000 years BP and the agro-industrial times have only 150 years. If man had appeared on January 1rst, agriculture had started on the second half of December and the agro-industry on December 31st, late in the evening.
