H istory of the C ertificate in A griculture C ourse HISTORY OF THE CERTIFICATE IN AGRICULTURE COURSE After approval was given by the South Australian Education Department, the Cleve Area School Certificate in Agriculture course commenced in February, 1975. Support for the course from the community, staff and School Council led to the acquisition of a lease on 80 hectares of "Sims Bequest Farm" (under the control of the Department of Agriculture) 3km east of Cleve, on which the practical component of the course has since been based. 15 hectares of land owned by the South Australian Education department adjoining the school, which had been used for some time by Junior Secondary Agriculture Studies, was also utilized. During the years 1975 to 1982 the course evolved quickly to meet the needs of young agriculturalists on Eyre Peninsula. Students coming from places such as Ceduna, Port Lincoln, Tumby Bay, Wudinna, Whyalla, Kimba, Lock, Cowell and other pastoral areas were involved in developing the 80 hectares of land and the course concentrated on farming aspects applicable to Eyre Peninsula. Mathematics, English, Recreational Physical Education, Technical Studies, Animal Husbandry, Plant Production and Farm Management were studied. Various courses run by TAFE, intensive courses (e.g. shearing), work experience programmes and educational tours became an integral part of the course in this time. The Year 11 part of the course proved popular, with only a small percentage of students seeing the need to complete the Certificate course by doing Year 12.

Agriculture In Profile People from northern Asia are thought to have migrated to this continent about 20,000 years ago. By hunting and following herds of animals, they crossed the Bering land bridge that once connected Asia to Alaska. The people spread southward through an ice-free corridor just east of the Rocky Mountains, between the cordilleran and continental glaciers. Bison were critical to the life of the early inhabitants of the Great Plains. Bisons provided people with food, skins for clothing and shelter, containers, tools, weapons, and fuel. People were nomadic, moving their belongings with dog-pulled travois in order to stay near the wandering herds. Early hunters ambushed bison at water holes, trapped them in gullies, or hunters surrounded. Later, bison were stampeded over cliffs (buffalo jumps) or trapped in corrals (buffalo pounds). The theme of the College of Agriculture exhibit is "Iowa Agriculture: A Rich Heritage An Exciting Future." A collection of facts about Iowa agriculture and Iowa State's contributions over the past century will be on display. The exhibit will feature both the past and present using photos and statements to illustrate Iowa's impact on the agriculture industry. Children visiting the exhibit can create their own farm scene using rubber stamps. They can also test their knowledge of Iowa agriculture with a quiz. The History of Agriculture in Alberta How did agriculture become the industry just described, in such a new land and in such a relatively short time? The first white man to cultivate the soil in what is now Alberta was Peter Pond, a fur trader who established an isolated post near Lake Athabasca. In 1779 he was raising vegetables in his small garden. More than half a century later, in 1857, the explorer Captain John Palliser travelled the southern Prairies and pronounced the land and climate unsuitable for agriculture. Soon after that, settlers began to move into the area and Palliser's contention was disproved. But it was more than 100 years between Peter Pond's garden and any large-scale attempts at agriculture in what was then the Northwest Territories. Ranchers began to move into the southern areas between 1874 and 1880, mainly from similar country south of the American border. They found abundant grasses and a climate moderated by occasional Chinook winds in the winter, which made year-round grazing possible. Civilization in the form of the Northwest Mounted Police arrived when Fort Macleod was established in 1874. Surveyors had been working since 1871 on the mammoth task of dividing the Prairies into a grid system of townships (six miles by six miles), sections (one mile square) and quarter sections, in preparation for the allotment of the unbroken prairie to homesteaders. Settlement It was not until the Canadian Pacific Railway reached the area in 1883 that settlement of any consequence began. By the 1890s a tide of immigration into the West was underway, peaking just prior to the outbreak of the First World War. Between 1901 and 1905, 40,000 homesteads were granted in what in 1905 became the province of Alberta. Homesteaders were given freehold title to their land in exchange for paying $10, agreeing to stay on the land at least three years, breaking a certain amount of land each year and building a house. The settlers came mainly from Europe (especially northern, central and eastern Europe and the British Isles). Some also moved from the eastern provinces and northward from the United States, where virtually all good potential farmland had already been opened up by settlers.

In the same year he crossed to France in the suite of Lord Jermyn, Queen Henrietta Maria's chief officer, and remained with the royal family in exile for twelve years. After the Restoration he became a doctor of medicine, and was one of the first members of the Royal Society. He is buried in Westminster Abbey. History of Embryo Transfer In 1890 rabbit embryos were transferred from donor rabbits to surrogate/recipient rabbits. The experiment demonstrated that the surrogate's genetics would not influence the transferred embryo's genetic make-up end development. By 1930, the first bovine (cow) embryo was successfully collected. The initial method of collection was a surgical retrieval procedure that removed the oviducts of a slaughtered cow. This procedure defeated the purpose of extracting a continuous supply of embryos from a superior cow. Another method was developed that surgically removed the embryos of a live cow 72 hours post-ovulation, but this method defeated the purpose of superovulation. Another surgical method was developed that allowed for the recovery of a high percentage from a live cow. By 1951 successful bovine embryo transfer was accomplished, but it wasn't until 1964 that a nonsurgical method of embryo collection succeeded. Throughout the 18th century "tobacco growing" days, the 19th century "grain production" and the growth of dairy farms in the 20th century, Montgomery County has continued as a forerunner in agricultural yields and methods. The Depression, following prolonged tobacco culture at the end of the 18th century, resulted in the formation of the Sandy Spring Farmers' Society which promoted "scientific farming." Within a few years, county farmers organized what is considered the nation's first agricultural fair and the first agricultural journal. The impact that county farmers had on local, state and national agriculutural events would continue under the leadership of Sandy Spring's frugal Quakers and men like Dr. William Brewer of Poolesville, who was the founder of the Medley's District Agricultural Grange, which hosted Maryland's first Farmers' Institute. Allen Bowie Davis led the drive that created the Maryland Agricultural College, now the University of Maryland , even offering his own land for a campus!
