No other word engenders as much fear, revulsion, despair and utter helplessness as AIDS. Despite increased AIDS awareness, the terror persists. AIDS is, in fact, rewriting medical history as humankind's deadliest scourge. With 40 million deaths forecast in this millennium, statistics tell their own sordid tale.
The first recorded sample of HIV was discovered in 1959 in a blood specimen obtained at Leopoldville (now Kinshasa) in the Belgian Congo. This was the first known death chalked up by AIDS. The HIV is thought to have originally affected chimpanzees. The crossover of the virus from animals to humans may have occurred in the 1950s through an accident or a bite.
Intermittently, other theories of its origins have been advanced during the ongoing process of AIDS research. One theory, put forward by Bette Korber, traces the disease to a single viral ancestor that could have emerged between 1910 and 1950. Through an AIDS research analysis done at the Los Alamos National Lab in New Mexico, Korber contends that the pandemic may have come from one or more infected humans around 1930.
Pascal argued that the vaccine, which was grown in cultures obtained from chopped up chimpanzee kidneys, may have carried this virus. Polio researcher Dr Albert Sabin had reported that such a batch was contaminated by an unknown virus. In fact, monkeys harbor SIV or simian immunodeficiency virus (SV-40 to be more specific), which is thought to be the ancestor of HIV.

Dr. David Satcher, the Surgeon General of the United States, states that there are 33.4 million HIV-infected people around the world, and 665,000 in the United States. It is estimated that 50 percent of all new HIV infections in the United States are among people under 25, the majority of these young people are infected sexually. Nearly half (44 percent) of the HIV infections in the age group 13 to 24 were reported among young females and over half (63 percent) were among African Americans. It is important to remember that HIV can be present in the body for up to twelve years without producing any outward signs of illness. How Can You Become Infected?

HIV AND AIDS
Hiv and women in Africa More than 70% of the world's HIV positive people are in sub-Saharan Africa, and many of them are women. Studies of HIV prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa have largely focused on anonymous testing of blood taken from pregnant women at antenatal clinics. But this is likely to underestimate the real levels of HIV among women. Women who have HIV progressively become less fertile, so the longer they have HIV, the less likely they are to become pregnant. This means that they will no longer go to antenatal clinics, so will not be tested, meaning that antenatal testing fails to reflect the true extent of HIV in women as a whole. Population-based studies suggest that infection among men is lower than the levels recorded among pregnant women.

Data collected last year showed 30,736 people were carrying the AIDS virus, 1,594 had full-blown AIDS and 684 people had died from illnesses related to the disease, the study said.
And the figure could soar to 10 million by 2010, said Siri Tellier, chairwoman of the U.N. Theme Group on HIV/AIDS in China, which prepared the report.
AIDS AWARENESS MINIMAL
The Chinese government went public with its fight against AIDS last year after state media exposed the rampant spread of HIV in rural Henan province, where farming families contracted the virus from selling plasma to illegal blood banks. But the UNAIDS report said the government had not done enough. It blamed institutional red tape, a lack of commitment and leadership by government officials, insufficient resources and a crumbling public health care system for the slow response.

Is HIV the Primary Cause of AIDS? Much more is known now about AIDS than was known when the epidemic started, but the mainstream medical establishment does not acknowledge it. In 1996, Dr. Peter Duesberg, professor of molecular and cell biology at the University of California, proposed an alternate hypothesis for the onset of AIDS which was counter to the mainstream of AIDS research and treatment. In Inventing the AIDS Virus Duesberg conclusively proves that HIV cannot be the sole cause of AIDS, because it fails the "Koch postulates" used to determine whether a disease is caused by a specific virus or bacteria. Specifically, he shows that there are many people around the world who have AIDS but do not have HIV infection, and, conversely, there are people who have been infected with HIV, never showed any signs of AIDS, and are now free of the virus despite no standard AIDS treatment. In fact

What is AIDS?
AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. What causes AIDS? AIDS is a collection of illnesses caused by a virus called human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV. HIV is found in the blood, semen and vaginal secretions of an infected person. How is AIDS spread? The HIV virus is mainly spread by unprotected sex and sharing needles with an HIV-infected person. Babies born to HIV-infected women may become infected. You do not become infected by casual contact or insects. How many people have HIV? 548,102 AIDS cases in the United States have been reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC lists 343,000 AIDS deaths. Worldwide, the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS estimates 21.8 million people are living with HIV/AIDS. Of that number, the majority (21 million) are adults, and women are approximately 42 percent.

What is HIV
AIDS derives from a virus called HIV (human immunodeficency virus). The virus attacs among other things against a part of the white blood cells and can stay hidden for a long time with out the appearance of symtoms. The body creates an antibody which can be detected in the blood. The antibody on the other hand, cannot be traced in the blood until a few weeks or months after infection... Read more

This is the condition caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). People who have a positive blood test for the virus are said to be HIV positive. People who have certain diseases associated with HIV infection due to a depressed immune system are said to have AIDS. Being HIV positive does not mean that you have AIDS. What causes AIDS and who is at risk? HIV is carried in certain body fluids including blood, semen, vaginal secretions and breast milk; contact with these fluids from an infected person through sexual contact, sharing needles, during birth or breast-feeding can lead to infection with HIV. HIV infects and destroys white blood cells called CD4 Although HIV was first identified among homosexual men in San Francisco in the early 1980s, it is now found throughout the world among both sexes. HIV is particularly prevalent in Africa and in many developing countries. In developed countries, it is found predominantly in:
  • People who indulge or have indulged in high-risk sexual behaviour such as having unprotected sex with sexually active homosexual men, prostitutes or the female sexual partners of bisexual men

NUTRITION AND AIDS: The Crucial Link*
By Rose Otaye
Rose Otaye has been living with HIV/AIDS for several years, and at this time she displays no symptoms of the illness and lives an active, productive life. One of Rose's many activities is to council HIV positive people; her special focus is nutrition. The problem in Kenya, Rose said, is that poverty has made it all but impossible for most people to afford special health care available to people with HIV/AIDS in Western countries. The lack of medication imposes challenges that Rose confronts with special diets, all of them with common foods and none beyond the economic reach of average people. In this essay, Rose describes the approach she offers the people she counsels. The rational makes common sense, the diets have evolved over time as people without other resources have explored foods to address problems associated with AIDS-related illnesses. Rose Otaye is a resident of Kenya and a regular visitor to WiRED's Community Information Centers. NUTRITION AND AIDS: The Crucial Link
By Rose Otaye Information on nutrition and HIV/AIDS is, to say the least, limited. The diet of a person living with AIDS (PLWA) is a tricky issue. It is made worse by the lack of access to the goods required and the lack of resources available to produce or purchase recommended foods. Furthermore, those living with AIDS regularly experience a serious loss of appetite. To combat this, the recommendation for medical practitioners is to put the patient on vitamin supplements. As well, the diet for an AIDS-infected patient should be similar to that for someone suffering from malnourishment; the relationship between the two diseases and malnutrition has long been recognized.
