In the neap-tide of articles, essays and pontifications about the recent space shuttle disaster, this bit of news is starting to propagate out via the major news outlets: A ground-based telescope operated by the Air Force has apparently captured high-resolution photographs of the shuttle which show severe damage to the left wing. The article , appears in the Feb. 10 issue of Aviation Week and Space Technology , and while the images will probably help NASA pinpoint the cause of the disaster, it was the telescope that caught my attention. The telescope is part of the Starfire Optical Range (a division of the Directed Energy Directorate , which should give you some idea of their main mission) at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico. A report by the Federation of American Scientists claims that with adaptive optics installed, the telescope should be able to resolve basketball sized objects 1000 miles away in space. The Starfire telescopes are used to produce highly-detailed astronomical pictures while researching adaptive optics . The rapid-slew mounts also allow them to acquire and track passing spy satellites. Sponsors

Murder trial starts for ex-Air Force cadet
Graham goes on trial Monday for the murder of 16-year-old Adrianne Jones In this story:
July 6, 1998
Web posted at: 9:13 a.m. EDT (1313 GMT) NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas (CNN) More than four months after his ex-fiancee was convicted of murdering a romantic rival and sentenced to life in prison, former Air Force Academy cadet David Graham was brought into court Monday for the start of his own trial. Graham, 20, once had hopes of becoming a fighter pilot. Instead, he's on trial for a 1995 killing and faces the possibility of life in prison. Prosecutors allege he shot 16-year-old Adrianne Jones, a high school classmate with whom he'd had a romantic fling, because his jealous girlfriend, Diane Zamora, told him to. Hundreds of prospective jurors have been called for the selection process. Once a panel has been chosen, opening statements are scheduled to begin by July 15.

Air Force reports 2 more encounters between civilian, military aircraft
February 10, 1997
Web posted at: 2:10 p.m. EST NEW YORK (CNN) The Air Force is investigating two more incidents involving close encounters between military aircraft and commercial airliners, Air Force sources told CNN. The report follows two such encounters last week, including one that forced a Nations Air 727 to take evasive action. A L S O Transcript of cockpit conversation In one of the newly reported incidents, an F-16 pilot reportedly left his assigned altitude and closed to within 5 miles of a Northwest Airlines Airbus over Texas. In the second, two F-16 pilots supposedly left their assigned altitude and came within 3 1/2 miles of an American Airlines plane over New Mexico. Both incidents occurred Friday. Civilian investigators on Monday were faulting a military air traffic controller for last Wednesday's close encounter between two Air Force F-16s and a commercial airliner, The New York Times reported Monday. The investigators told the newspaper they believe the military controller knew about the Nations Air 727 and a United Parcel Service DC-8 flying in restricted airspace but did not relay that information to the two military jets.

Polish Air Force in Lincolnshire za nasza i wasza wolnosc
The Polish Air Force (Polskie Sily Powietrzne) was founded at the end of the Great War and in the 1920s/1930s was supported by a substantial aviation industry. It was the first air force in the world to equip its front-line fighter force entirely with all-metal monoplanes, and many international aviation records were established. Originally part of the Army - Lotnictwo Wojskowe (Military Aviation) - it became an independent part of the Polish Armed Forces in 1940. Following the invasion of Poland by Germany and the Soviet Union in September 1939 the Polish government and forces evacuated to Romania, and on into France where they reformed. After the fall of France the Polish government was established in London and Polish armed forces came under the overall allied command. During the Battle of Britain in 1940 1 in 8 of allied pilots was Polish, and the highest scoring allied fighter pilot flew with 303 Squadron of the Polish Air Force. It is said that the Battle of Britain was won by a narrow margin, and the contribution of the already combat experienced Polish pilots was decisive.
