That same year, Les joined Columbia University's Underwater Sound Laboratory, where he participated in research associated with the war effort. It was there that he published, in 1945, his first, and perhaps most influential, paper on the behavior of waves in the presence of a disordered array of scatterers. Originally developed to treat the multiple scattering of sound from the cloud of cavitation bubbles in the wake of a submarine, this theory was found to have a wide application in areas as diverse as neutron scattering and the behavior of electrons in disordered alloys. Les's fundamental insights were subsequently rediscovered many times by later workers who were unaware of his paper. His time at Columbia was eventful, and is especially poignant now in light of the World Trade Center airplane disasters on 11 September 2001. Working one Saturday on the 64th floor of the Empire State Building, he was startled to hear the sound of a rapidly approaching airplane. A tremendous noise signaled that it had crashed into the building a few floors above him, resulting in some loss of life. Considerate, but also sparing with his words, Les sent a telegram to his wife, Roma, in Florida with this simple message: "Don't worry. I'm all right!" She was unaware of the accident and, on receiving his telegram, worried!

My own fears were expressed in the reality of being close to someone who was involvedin not one but three near airplane disasters over a short period of time.
http://www.reflection-idea.com/larger.html
Home Table of Contents Previous Chapter Next Chapter Larger Webs I t is when we start to look at larger webs of connections that Reflection really begins to assault common sense. Reflection implies that events involving large numbers of people, such as a plane crash, are perfect reflections of the inner selves of all involved. It implies that all is a reflection of each one of us, and that each one of us is a reflection of all. While very difficult to accept, this is exactly the world view of many Eastern mystics and some Western philosophers as well. But knowing others have thought this is not a compelling argument for its truth. The only way to really understand it is to open your mind to the possibility and see if it works in the situations you know. For these large webs, Reflection does not imply everyone's needs are the same, or as intense. Each person experiences a shared reality uniquely. For example, in a plane crash some people survive. Their reality is clearly different from those who die. One can assume their inner needs are different as well, as are the inner

The 10 deadliest airplane crashes
Fatalities have been a part of aviation since its earliest days. In fact, the first person to die in an aviation accident was a passenger flying with Orville Wright. Lt. Thomas E. Selfridge died Sept. 17, 1908, at Fort Meyer, Va., as Orville demonstrated the Wright's airplane for the U.S. Army. Orville was severely injured in the accident. Since that day, countless people have died in aviation accidents. Here's a recount of the 10 deadliest. 1. 583 dead. March 27, 1977, Tenerife, Canary Islands. A KLM 747-200 collides with a Pan Am 747-100 on the runway during heavy fog. Both planes erupt into flames. Sixty-six aboard the Pan Am plane survive. 2. 520 dead. Aug. 12, 1985, Mt. Osutaka, Japan. A Japan Air Lines 747SR suffers an aft bulkhead failure which causes severe control difficulties. The plane crashes into a mountain. Four people survive. 3. 349 dead. Nov. 12, 1996, near New Delhi, India.

SITEMAP
Experts/Investigators/Theories
In general aviation accidents, the government investigators often send key parts (such as engines and instruments) to the manufacturers, to check them for possible defects that might have led to the crash. Theoretically, these parts are supposed to be under the surveillance and control of the government investigators all the time that they are on the premises of the manufacturer, but in reality, this is sometimes like putting the thieves in charge of the loot. Experienced counsel can insure that evidence is preserved, that experts re-review the investigation of government agencies and manufacturers. For these reasons alone, experienced counsel is critical to the success of a victim's claim. As a general principle, the law applicable to disasters occurring on ground, and even upon the high seas, is applicable to disasters committed in the air or otherwise connected with the operation of aircraft. This principle has been codified in some states, including California. It is incumbent upon counsel to determine in a given accident who was responsible for the disaster itself. The National Transportation Safety Board has estimated that approximately 83% of all general aviation accidents are attributable to pilot error. Thus, in some cases involving injuries to passengers, bystanders or property loss, the pilot, his estate and/or employer could be primarily at fault. Whether there was negligent preflight of the aircraft, negligent flight planning, inadequate flight experience for conditions, or other error must all be considered by counsel.

Airplane Crashes and Airline Crashes
1. What are the causes of airplane crashes? Although commercial airline travel is generally considered to be one of the safest methods of travel, tragedies can and do occur.
The causes of airplane crashes are many and may include:
  • Inadequate security, resulting in hijacking;
  • Equipment malfunction or failure;
  • Pilot error; or
  • Control tower error.
2. If I have, or someone I know has, been in an airplane crash, what should I do?
It is extremely important to have an experienced aviation attorney who has expertise in the handling and presentation of an airplane crash case.
It is critical not to do anything that might have a negative affect upon your case. An experienced attorney might advise you not to give any statements or sign any authorizations, so it is important to get the advice of an experienced attorney before you do something that could have a negative impact upon your case. 3. How do I go about getting experts to help me with my airplane crash case?

    On September 11, 2001, the attack on America shocked Americans as few of us have ever experienced. We do not know how to cope with it; even though we were not at the World Trade Center in NY, in Pennsylvania, or at the Pentagon. Below you will find pictures that will say more than I could ever express in words. You will also see a letter written by three individuals that will give you food for thought. Last, but not least, the page will end with a prayer and a chance for YOU to forward this page to your friends and families. God's blessings be with you now and forever; keeping you safe and healthy.
