ITS Canada Annual Conference and General Meeting

MINUTES OF THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING, MARCH 25, 2002
The Annual General Meeting was conducted as part of the program for the ITS Canada Annual Conference, which was held at the Wyndham Bristol Place Hotel in Toronto. The Annual General Meeting began at 8:45 a.m. and was chaired by Joseph Lam, Chairman of ITS Canada. There were approximately 120 members in attendance. Joe welcomed everyone, including our special guests:
  • Susan Spencer, Director of ITS at Transport Canada
  • Two visitors from Brazil, Roberto Mastrangelo, and Vania Torquato Sorbrado, Director of Transportation for Sao Paulo
  • Joe noted that, five years ago, the mission and objectives of ITS Canada were developed to promote the application of modern technologies in transportation. Objectives included increasing awareness of ITS in the community, providing a forum for user needs and requirements, overseeing standards of ITS in Canada, providing input to government agenies, fostering multi-disciplinary partnerships, and encouraging the implementation of Canadian ITS applications abroad. Building awareness is done through workshops and annual conferences, as well as presentations to city councils, associations, and at other conferences. Joe advised that this will be a critical year for developing the framework for standards. The development and maintenance has been done mostly on a volunteer basis, and the process will now become more formalized. In March 2001, the framework was completed, a report was submitted to Transport Canada and approved, and a proposal for implementation was also approved. Fundraising is now in process, along with identifying stakeholders.

Architecture
Dublin's architecture is mixed but most of the city is Georgian (1720-1830s) and Victorian (1838-1901). Many of the principal buildings of the city are neo-classical. Modern buildings in the city-centre are evident but rare the most obvious being Liberty Hall, Dublin's sole sky scraper, and the infamous "Bunkers". The suburbs are mainly of post independence (1919) construction but notable exceptions are Ballsbridge, Donnybrook, Dún Laoghaire, Dalkey, and Howth among others. 1916 Easter Rising Accommodation Ratings Airport Transport Currency and Money Matters ... Events The new terminal Development: Within just a few years of going into operation, Munich Airport claimed its place among Europe's major air transport hubs and has been ranked 9th among Europe's top ten airports since 1998. In 1999 21.3 million passengers were counted. The latest projections call for this number to swell to 40 million by 2010. This enormous growth in passenger traffic has caused Munich Airport to reach its capacity limits much sooner than expected. The existing terminal has already been repeatedly expanded. To ensure that sufficient capacities are available to meet expected growth in passenger traffic, Munich Airport will need a second terminal in 2003 along with the airside and landside infrastructure to serve it. Location: Terminal 2 is being built to the east of the existing passenger area. The terminal's defining pier is aligned in a north-south direction. The design permits satellite facilities to be built, if necessary, that will be functionally dependent on Terminal 2. The two-level design will place arrivals and departures above one another on the land side, while the airside of the terminal will separate "Schengen" and "non-Schengen" flights - i.e. flights with and without passport checks. Terminal 2 will be linked to the Munich Airport Center (MAC), with the direct pedestrian route to the S-Bahn rail station leading through the MAC's roofed-in forum.

Kevin Roche (born 14th June 1922) was born in Dublin, but grew up in Mitchelstown, Co. Cork, and educated at Rockwell College, before studying architecture at University College Dublin. According to The Irish Times, 'years later, he recalled having to draw acanthus leaves and fluted classical columns as part of the Beaux Arts training then offered by the UCD School of Architecture - at a time when most US students were "taught to distain the past".' After graduation in 1945, he worked with Michael Scott on the project. According to Wilfrid Cantwell, Roche only worked on the design for a short time but contributed to the external appearance of the finished building on the pavilion storey. He joined the practice at the same time as Patrick Scott who was in his class at college, and who had a large role in the project through the design of the mosaic tiling. He left Dublin in 1948 and worked with Maxwell Fry and Jane Drew before he emigrated to the United States to study with Mies van der Rohe. Instead of returning to Ireland, he got a job with Eero Saarinen (1910-1961) and Associates from 1951 until 1961. Here he worked in the planning department before becoming chief associate in 1956. After Saarinen's death he continued the practice in partnership with the structural engineer John Dinkeloo (1918-1981) under the name Roche and Dinkeloo. Here, he completed such projects as the Gateways Arch at St Louis, Missouri, and the TWA Terminal ar JFK Airport.
