A Changing Market
Design Firm Executives Experience a Settling Market and Expect the Slowdown to Continue By Craig Barner Indeed, a decline in backlogs at some companies reveals a settling market. According to top executives, backlogs averaged between six months and 18 months, depending on the firm, its location and the type of work it does. Looking back a year, these executives said backlogs averaged three to six months higher.

Holding on to History

An Historic Landmark of the Nation's Capital Serving the People Who Make History for More than 60 Years... Almost from the beginning of the English Colonial History of this continent, the crest of the National Airport site has been rich in historic significance. The Gravelly Point site has significance dating back to colonial days. Captain John Alexander built a mansion called "Abingdon" on the site in 1746. A descendent, Philip Alexander, donated most of the land on which the City of Alexandria was built, and it was so named in his honor. The mansion was purchased in 1778 by John Parke Custis, and was the birthplace of Eleanor "Nelly" Parke Custis, stepdaughter of President George Washington. Abingdon was destroyed by fire in 1930 and the ruins stabilized until 1998 when the Airports Authority preserved the site and housed artifacts found there in the Exhibit Hall, located in Terminal A. Airport facilities in Washington, D.C. had long been seriously inadequate early in the 20th Century. Hoover Field, located near the present site of the Pentagon, was the first major terminal to be developed in the Capital area, opening its doors in 1926. The following year, Washington Airport, another privately operated field, began service next door. In 1930, the economics of the Great Depression caused the two terminals to merge to form Washington-Hoover Airport. Bordered on the east by Highway One, with its accompanying high-tension electrical wires, and obstructed by a high smokestack on one approach and a dump nearby, the field was less than adequate. Incredibly, the airport's one runway was intersected by a busy vehicular street, Military Road, which had guards posted to flag down traffic during takeoffs and landings.

The overall themes of the conference were digital film, animation, and related educational curriculum, along with page layout and presentation techniques. Apple and their suppliers briefed us on various software, hardware, and educational issues related to these themes. Apple began with a presentation from Kurt Bedell. He gave an overview of Apple's views of technology trends and their strategic focus in the Higher Education market. He noted how technology was converging formerly specialized areas (service bureaus and printers, digital effects and photographers) and that the increasing power and decreasing cost was leveling participation in these areas. Once you arrive from I-95 or the Baltimore-Washington International Airport, you'll be wanting to stay in the most part of town. Or the most scenic. Or the cheapest.
Many people think of the Inner Harbor as their destination in Baltimore. If that's your style try the Sheraton at Inner Harbor , or the Days Inn at Harbor Inn if you're on a budget. It's tempting to stay at a hotel right on the waterfront but, of course, staying in the busiest part of town is not always the most desirable thing to do. Many people stay out by the Airport at places like the Sleep Inn and Suites Airport , or along I-95. Some stay up by Johns Hopkins University.
A very pleasant place to stay is the Hopkins Inn in the Mt Vernon area. The Clarion Hotel at Peabody Court is a really a good central location, within walking distance to the Peabody Conservatory or the Walters Gallery, and a short ride south to the Inner Harbor or north to Johns Hopkins University. There are many excellent shops, restaurants and hotels in the area, and a wonderful assortment of 19-Century architecture. It's less expensive than staying on the Inner Harbor, though of course a bit more than a night at a bed and breakfast or a motel by the airport. Customer Support About Us Site Map Hotel.us Home

Learn more about our Airport services "Mead & Hunt is changing the face of many local airports that not only need provisions for regional jets, but also need design and comfort updates," said Andy Platz, vice president and manager of the firm’s airport department. Pellston Regional Airport of Emmet County (Pellston, Michigan), Chippewa County International Airport (Kincheloe, Michigan), Outagamie County Regional Airport (Appleton, Wisconsin), Dane County Regional Airport (Madison, Wisconsin), Central Wisconsin Airport (Mosinee, Wisconsin) and La Crosse Municipal Airport (La Crosse, Wisconsin). In addition, many small- and mid-sized carrier airports are requesting unique design themes that reflect the area geography, industry, or society. The design at Outagamie County Regional Airport, for example, reflects the Fox River, which flows through the heart of the Appleton area. The goal is to make the airport memorable to users. Witnesses tell of air crash horror
By Paul Nowell in Charlotte, USA
TWENTY-one people have been confirmed dead after their commuter plane crashed into an airport hangar on take-off in the US.
Authorities this morning said everyone on board - 19 passengers and two crew - had been killed. The cause of the crash - the deadliest US. air accident in nearly 14 months - was not immediately clear. Express Flight 5481, a Beech 1900 twin-engine turboprop, was taking off in clear, windy weather from Charlotte/Douglas International Airport in North Carolina. It hit the corner of the hangar at full throttle just before 9am local time, officials said.
Benjamin Witkege told The Charlotte Observer that the plane attracted his attention as he and his girlfriend, Erin Murphy, arrived at the airport.

C HICAGO O'H ARE: A IRPORT F OR T HE M ASSES
by Heiko Reuter When Bill Lonergan talks of his snowplows, he gets going. As Deputy Commissioner Airside Operations, he is controlling a fleet of 200 of the yellow vehicles. His job is "to keep O'Hare open - under all circumstances". Not an easy task. The winter brings plenty of ice and snow and, in this part of the country, the cold season sometimes lasts for six months. Chicago O'Hare is holding numerous superlatives. It is not just an airport. O'Hare is an air traffic hub of gigantic dimensions and, a significant economical factor. Measured by the number of passengers, the airport located at the southern extension of Lake Michigan has been the world's number one for years. More than 69 million passengers arrived or departed from O'Hare in 1996. Frankfurt airport in Germany, which is the largest airport in continental Europe, "only" counted 39 million passengers in the same time frame. With 32 million passengers, the new Denver airport, which is celebrated as the largest airport in size, only ranges in 11th place on the global scale: No comparison, an O'Hare representative says. The O'Hare managers are praising their airport as "the world capitol of commercial air traffic" and are not getting tired of pointing out the achievements. Just to address some of them: No other airport counts that many take-offs and landings (in 1996: 900.000 movements on the seven runways). The airport gets its power supply from its own power plant. The amount of concrete used for the ramp areas would have been enough to build a 130 centimeter wide sidewalk from Chicago to New York.
