Getting There By Plane Money Saving Flights By Car By Train ... New Air Travel Security Measures By Plane Three major airports serve New York City: John F. Kennedy International Airport (tel. ) in Queens, about 15 miles (24km; 1 hr. driving time) from Midtown Manhattan; LaGuardia Airport (tel. ), also in Queens, about 8 miles (13km; 30 min.) from Midtown; and Newark International Airport (tel. ) in nearby New Jersey, about 16 miles (26km; or 45 min.) from Midtown. Information about all three airports is available online at www.panynj.gov ; click on the "Airports" tab on the left. Even though LaGuardia is the closest airport to Manhattan, it earned the dubious distinction of being the worst airport in the nation for flight delaysboth departures and arrivalsin 2000, according to the FAA. What's more, LaGuardia has a hideous reputation for terminal chaos, in both ticket-desk lines and baggage claim. It is hoped airport officials will have rectified the problems by the time you fly, but you may want to use JFK or Newark instead. (JFK has the best reputation for timeliness among New York-area airports.) Almost every major domestic carrier serves at least one of the New York-area airports; most serve two or all three. March 4, 2003
John Whisler, chief operating officer of Leo A Day, said his company wanted a presence in the upper Midwest. "We have a consultant that we work with who basically told us that this firm that he had come across seemed like they were so similar to our firm that the cultural match would have been incredible," Whisler said. Whisler said the companies began working on the acquisition last May. Leo A Daly officials liked what they saw in the Minneapolis firm, and the acquisition became official on Feb. 1. Specific terms of the deal weren't disclosed. Defense-related work for the U.S. government spurred growth for Leo A Daly in the 1950s and '60s, and the Omaha firm was interested in re-entering that market.

A Word from Eric Miller for March, 2003
Near-Perfect Portland
SAN FRANCISCO, March, 2003In this issue of The New Colonist we've outlined what in our opinion are the ten top qualities a healthy city has, as well as lists of what both you and government planners and politicians can do to make city design and livability better. Each of us of course has our own list of amenities we would like our town to have. I too have my own list in my head. I went through that list on my first visit to the Pacific Northwest. Before I was able to experience the city firsthand, I had heard the hype about Portland. I had read about its growth boundaries, its transit, and the walkability of the city. You hear a lot of hype though, and without any intentional negligence, I never thought much about Portland or what it was like. Now I know it really is an excellent city that others, including San Francisco, can learn a lot from. The official city website, after all, says it plain as day: "We plan for smart development and to prevent urban sprawl." This lets me know that even if Portland isn't perfect now, it will likely continue to move in the right direction. I arrived by train, which is one of my personal criteria (and one of TNC's criteria) for a healthy urban environment. A train station is essential for me, but Portland went beyond that with a beautiful, historic train station.

Chicago is one of the easier towns in which to find any address, because of its predictable numbered grid of streets. Its colorful political history, which includes the activities of Al Capone and his associates during the Prohibition era, as well as its sports and commercial history as capital of the Midwest, provides visitors with many famous landmarks to explore. The "Windy City", known for its inspiring architecture, beautiful lake views and, of course, deep dish pizza, offers numerous hotel options for both business and leisure travel.

computers and voice message recorders, Answer Midwest provides businesses with a warm, caring and reassuring voice," owner Gary Tedrick said. The 20 full- and part-time employees of Answer Midwest work 24/7 to answer more than 120,000 calls per month for some 600 clients.
A fellow member of Tedrick's church, Faith Covenant Church in Alton, introduced Tedrick to Vera Randolph, the owner of the Answering Service of Alton and the Physicians and Surgeons Exchange. It didn't take long for Tedrick and his wife, Lee Ann, to buy the business.
"We believe it was the Lord's leading," he said. "The business has become a family affair. For the past four years, our daughter, Jennifer Schulz, who has a strong business mind, has served as our administrative manager." Tedrick said the company's revenues have quadrupled since 1991.

http://www.prairiecrossing.com/pc/site/about-us.html
About Prairie Crossing Prairie Crossing, the nationally recognized, conservation-minded community in Grayslake, recently opened its final phase, Station Village, where homes are an easy walk from the train. Station Village will soon include neighborhood-scale shops and offices. Every home site offers views of open space and ready access to approximately 10 miles of on-site walking and biking trails. Three new fully-furnished models are now open to the public. Prairie Crossing, which includes 362 home sites on 677 acres, has been designed to combine development with the preservation of open land and easy commuting to the city by rail. Because sprawl, with its tendency to eat up farmland and clog highways with traffic, is jeopardizing the quality of life in metropolitan areas across the country, Prairie Crossing has become a national example of how to design our communities to support a better way of life. Station Village: Prairie Crossing's Final Phase
To date, Prairie Crossing has sold over 75% of its 362 lots. This fall it opened its final section, Station Village, where residents can have it all: access to trails, lakes and farmland, future shops and two train stations. Station Village's home sites were arranged to demonstrate the best practices of small-town architecture and planning . Most lots border neighborhood common areas where residents can relax and play. Some home sites have long views over restored prairies, wetlands, and the 22-acre Lake Aldo Leopold. From Station Village it is a short walk on the trail system to the boat dock, where you can paddle across the lake to the beach. Sidewalks and front porches make it natural for neighbors to meet, and alleys provide access to rear garages. Four of the 17 house designs available in Station Village are new to the market and are based on the Craftsman and Prairie School architectural traditions. The remaining floor plans are variations on Midwest architectural themes. Prices range from $279,000 to $419,000. A wide array of standard options and custom features is available.
