Flying Comfortably

Read Advice Write an essay on this topic. The Best and the Worst U.S. Airports
Dec 28 '00
Over the past years, I've probably had the opportunity (or some would say disadvantage) to fly hundreds of times, mainly in the U.S. I've had some pleasant experiences and many awful experiences, but have been surprised at the differences in the condition, friendliness, and layout of airports across the nation. The following is my list of best and worst airports in America, separated by large and small airports.
Best Small Airports
Northwest Arkansas This is a brand new airport in the middle of nowhere (between Rogers and Fayetteville), but it is sparkling! I was stuck there for a few hours, but didn't mind as the huge airport bar was one of the most fun I've been in with a good selection of beers on tap, cigars, and pool tables and games.
Colorado Springs Beautiful architecture with automatic grand pianos and artwork throughout the lobby; a much cheaper and convenient alternative to Denver especially if you have business south of the city.
Ontario (CA) Much more convenient and relaxed than LAX, so consider as an option if you have business in Los Angeles; in fact, consider any of the alternative Los Angeles airports (Orange County, Long Beach, Ontario, or Burbank) instead of LAX, all of which are better and sometimes more convenient.

Downtown's Abandoned Intel Building
As monuments to hubris go, Austin has its share. Take the Bob Bullock State Amusement Park er, History Museum at the Capitol complex, or the towering McMansions that clutter the hillsides from Mount Bonnell to West Lake Hills. But for real evidence that the mighty have the farthest to fall, look no farther than the abandoned Intel building downtown, where a concrete skeleton has replaced city leaders' vision of a dynamic, tech-driven "digital downtown."

Best Bridge Over Troubled Water
James D. Pfluger, FAIA, Bridge
When the foot bridge over Town Lake officially opened on June 16, joggers, bicyclists, hikers, and drivers breathed a collective sigh of relief as non-combustion traffic was routed away from the narrow sidewalks of the old Lamar bridge thankful that pedestrians and bicyclists no longer have to risk their lives crossing Town Lake alongside SUVs and their attendant cell phones, and impressed that we got a new bridge with its own personality, not just a sidewalk strapped to the old one. Named for an architect who helped design the Town Lake hike-and-bike trail, the Pfluger pedestrian bridge took several years and too many fatal accidents for the city to approve construction, but once they committed to the $8 million project it took contractors three months to get it up and open, heralding a new era of transportation planning for Austin.

Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum
With elements of neoclassical grandeur and pure-Texan extravagance, all tied up with a pink marble bow, the building is an appropriate repository for so many of the artifacts of true Texas pride. With it's massive columns, magnificent mosaic floor of the rotunda, shining woodwork, and user-friendly layout, this museum is quite the addition to our fine cityscape. 1800 N. Congress, 936-8746

Texas State Capitol
No matter what our readers might think about what goes on under her glowing granite dome, loyalties remain steadfast for this unbeatable symbol of all that is true and fine about the Great State of Texas. Designed in the late 1800s by Detroit architect E.E. Myers, our Texas state Capitol is the largest of all state capitols in the U.S. and second only to the nation's Capitol building in Washington, D.C. (Ours is taller, however, by about 15 feet!) From the tip of the shining star held aloft by the Goddess of Liberty atop the dome, to the open rotunda under the north wing's Capitol Extension, every inch of granite, brass, and polished wood testifies to the spirit of those of us who live deep in the heart of Texas.

Australasia It's hard to know where to start when describing the South Island - there is just so much diversity in this region, from the dramatic peak of New Zealand's largest mountain, Mt. Cook and the ocean playground of Kaikoura, to the inspirational scenery of the Canterbury Plains and the Southern Alps near the region's capital, Christchurch. Then there are the incredible Fox and Franz Josef glaciers, fascinating limestone landscapes and ancient rainforests that are located to the West of the region, an utterly photogenic area, rich in carefully protected natural scenery. With so much to do here, it's no wonder so many people return time and time again to the South Island. With its neo-gothic architecture and gently winding river elegant Christchurch is a leisurely-paced city which offers access to the more frenetic activities found in the surrounding countryside and the vineyards of the Canterbury Plains. From Canterbury most visitors gravitate towards the foothills of the Southern Alps and Mt Cook. Featuring all the staples of the Alpine experience - refreshing, clean air, magnificent snow-clad peaks and crystal-clear lakes, the Mt Cook experience is like no other in New Zealand. Ski on a glacier, try your hand at mountain climbing or just fill your lungs with the invigorating goodness that permeates every corner of this icy wonderland. The West Coast's attractions are manifold; to the north there are beaches, adventure activities and gold mining sites, while to the south lies the ethereal scenery of Glacier Country. Miami Beach is not actually attached to Miami the city. This heavenly stretch of land is a sand bar that is parallel to Biscayne Bay from Miami. Locals call this stretch of land the Billion Dollar Sandbar, because why else? Money rules. Most people come to Miami to visit Miami Beach and this happening mix of beautiful people, extravagant tastes and great beaches makes for an outrageous atmosphere. Southcom's AOR includes 19 nations all of Latin America and the Caribbean excluding Mexico and French Guiana. In 1997, waters surrounding Central and South America, the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean island nations were transferred from Atlantic Command to Southern Command responsibility. Several components of the U.S. Southern Command ( Southcom ), the body responsible for U.S. military activity in Latin America and the Caribbean, have relocated to Puerto Rico, where they are sharing existing facilities with other U.S. units. Fort Buchanan , in San Juan, now hosts the headquarters of U.S. Army South (USARSO), Southcom’s army component. The Army’s only presence in the Caribbean, Fort Buchanan became a USARSO installation in June 1997, and USARSO headquarters completed its move there from Fort Clayton , Panama in July 1999. The Southcom component, which includes an infantry battalion and aviation, engineer, intelligence, logistics and military police units, is now headquartered in the former “Building 390” barracks on the grounds of Fort Buchanan. The Defense Department is building new facilities for USARSO at Fort Buchanan as well, such as a 75-room guest house and a middle school.

Hong Kong airport - is it art?

See through glass reveals more at Hong Kong's new airport.
The BBC's Arts Correspondent Razia Iqbal looks at the architecture of Hong Kong's spectacular new airport. To define an airport as a work of art is not an instinctive association, but in the case of the new Hong Kong airport at Chek Lap Kok it is clear that in the second half of this century, building airports is a prestigious and artistic endeavour. Hailed as the most ambitious engineering project ever, the world's largest airport does make a spectacular statement. Sir Norman Foster, the British architect of Chek Lap Kok, has described his building as a celebration of the modern age of air travel. Nearly a century after the Wright brothers successfully sustained an aircraft in the air, flight is something which is now taken for granted all over the world. Yet most airports are designed so that passengers do not normally see the aircraft at all, so most people have no sense of the adventure of the flying machines, says Jonathan Glancey, architecture critic for the Guardian newspaper. Jonathan Glancey, architecture critic for the Guardian, says that by seeing the aircraft one can feel the magic of flying.
