Message from Interim President Walker
Subject: Message from Interim President Walker
Date: March 6, 2001 As the first 2001 Extraordinary (Special) Session of the Alabama
Legislature draws to a close today, I want to provide a summary of what
has transpired over the past couple of weeks. I believe it is important
that we all understand the recent actions of the governor and the
legislature regarding proration, and the impact those actions will have on
Auburn University and our continuing efforts to prevent further cuts to
higher education funding.
Over the past few weeks, I, along with other college presidents, have had
a number of discussions and meetings with the governor and various members
of the legislative leadership related to how to handle proration of the Education Trust Fund (ETF). Our message has been consistent: Cut all segments of education equally and protect the livelihood of all education employees in the state, not just those in K-12.

East Alabama AIDS Outreach teaches community about risks
By Carmen Juarez - Staff Writer January 30, 2003
Since its discovery, an estimated 8.4 million people worldwide have contracted AIDS. A recent report said there have been 1,300 combined cases of HIV and AIDS in Alabama among college-age youths (ages 20 to 24) alone. These statistics do not reflect the true numbers of those infected, since nine out of every 10 people do not know their status because they have not been tested. The East Alabama AIDS Outreach, EAAO, is a nonprofit organization that provides the community with outreach and education about HIV, as well as care and counseling for community members and families of people infected with the disease. EAAO serves Lee, Macon, Russell, Chambers and Tallapoosa counties. Among the direct services offered are HIV counseling and testing, access to medical care, pharmaceutical assistance programs, support groups, post-test education and substance abuse counseling.
