The first volume in a planned series of historical atlases of Alabama, "Historical Locations by County" includes a map of each county indicating historical towns, mills, ferries, post offices, landings, forts, bridges and Indian villages, dating back to the early 1800s. Notations about each place are included wherever possible. Among literally thousands of geographic and historical facts about the state, the atlas notes that a place known as Fort Jonesboro was the first permanent settlement in Jefferson County in 1815. The historic community of Dalraida, whose location is now a part of Montgomery, was named for an ancient kingdom in Scotland. Detailed maps show the locations of both historical and current places. The atlas also includes population data for each county and a selection of cities and towns by decades from time of establishment until 1990.

The New York Times Business March 18, 2001 Grass Roots Business: Downtown Revival Comes to the South By JOEL KOTKIN HUNTSVILLE, Ala. For much of his career, Patrick C. Sommers lived and worked in some of the world's most established urban business centers, like Chicago, London and Toronto. Yet today, Mr. Sommers, now chief executive of the Sirsi Corporation, a private company that makes software for libraries, finds himself comfortably ensconced in the small urban core of this technology-rich city of 177,000. "I am a big-city guy, but I like it," said Mr. Sommers, 53. His attraction to Huntsville and Sirsi's restored brick headquarters here reflects a broader trend that is only now sweeping Southern cities. For much of the last two decades — even as Northern and Western cities enjoyed urban recoveries — virtually all growth in the old Confederacy took place along the periphery. Today this is changing. In cities throughout the South — from Charlotte's "uptown" to Atlanta's burgeoning midtown to downtown Houston — there has been a rapid growth of urban development. Local business leaders and economic development professionals say it was necessary not only to bolster the local economy but to lure workers. Yet despite recent changes, most Southern metropolitan areas still have a very low percentage of their office space actually located in their central business districts. Whereas metropolitan regions like Chicago or New York have more than half of their office space in their central business districts, Southern cities like Nashville, Memphis and Atlanta have at least three-quarters of their office work force located in suburban and peripheral locations.

Believe me when I tell you that few city governments in Alabama - and even fewer county governments - have that kind of foresight. I live and work in Huntsville, which for a long time has been considered one of the state's most progressive cities. But even there, no one's really talking about how the city is evolving, or how big it should ultimately be. Without that dialogue, city leaders have to guess at what residents want - and they often guess wrong. A couple of weeks ago, the Huntsville City Council voted to buy several hundred acres along the Tennessee River for a river port and industrial park which could potentially lure thousands of new manufacturing jobs. But the public never got a chance to comment on the purchase until the vote was already taken. When word leaked out that the city would have to cut a barge canal through a section of a wildlife refuge to make the project work, many people were furious. More than 250 residents showed up at a meeting this week to criticize the port plan, and now a couple of City Council members want to change their vote because of all the opposition.
