Alabama - A State Unit Study This mini unit on ALABAMA uses the cross curricular approach to education. There are several activities from different academic subjects for you to choose from. One of the most important things is to have fun! Below are some activities to help you study ALABAMA. You may choose to do all, some, or none of the activities. You can also alter the activities to better suit your individual child's needs. Some of these activities overlap each other, choose the one you think that you and the children will enjoy most. The main point of this unit is to make learning about ALABAMA and enjoyable for all who are participating. Alabama's State Flag A crimson St. Andrew's cross on a white field, patterned after the Confederate Battle Flag, and adopted in 1895. The bars forming the cross must not be less than six inches broad and must extend diagonally across the flag from side to side. Flag adopted 1895. Create a State "Infodesk": Before you begin this unit you may want to set up a research area. Place a desk or table in front of a bulletin board area. This will be where you can place relevant books, magazines, photographs, posters, newspaper articles, maps, scrapbooks, games, puzzles, computer software, task cards, travel brochures, etc. that you collect. Print a blank map of the state, or draw one on tag board, that you can place on the bulletin board. As you study the political and physical features of the state, have the children fill in the name of the state capital, large cities, and major geographical features. Color the map using different shades for varying elevations.

Geography 320 US and Canada Site and Situation city assignment This paper is to be about 2 pages + bibliography. Double-spaced, 1" margins, typed. Please have each city on its own page! No more than a page per city should be necessary. We are looking for the reason thei city was founded where it was; what its relationship is/was with the surrounding area (situation); if this has changed since its founding, how and why. I do not need to know the Chamber of Commerce hype.
You are to choose 2 cities from the list at the right and analyze the city's site and situation. You will need to look at a variety of maps(see below) and both zoom in and zoom out to look at the city's physical features (site morphology) and its relative location and hinterlands (situation). I have emphasized location, site and situation in class. You should know what they are by now, but just in case:
Site: This extends the location description to include the ground a town occupies. The physical features of the landscape favor the placement of towns. It also allows for classifying towns according to physical features: rivertowns, gateways, natural resources. Site can also include the street layout, the demographic patterns and city functions or zones.

I don't expect you to provide this level of details in Project #2, but do try to make some sense of the data. Enjoy the place name assignment. U.S. Places Called Moscow
    by
Irina Vasiliev, Department of Geography, Syracuse University This paper examines naming patterns for the Moscows in the United States . Since 1800, 49 populated places have been named Moscow in the United States. Many have disappeared or changed their names. Today, there are 27. Not all of the Moscows are connected to each other. Some belong to groups that relate to a central notion from which spokes radiate to each place. Others are linked by a form of place-name genealogy by which a linear structure describes the relationships among the Moscow points. For others, the links are unknown, but, even for these, the name Moscow summons the impression of a cultured, mature city, characteristics entirely lacking in the new Moscows of the l800s in the interior of the United States. Napoleon's Influence Moscows of American Origin When the village became large enough to have a post office, the name had to be changed because another Greenville, in Texas, already had a post office. So, in memory of David Green's home in Tennessee, the post office was named Moscow (Heritage 1978). The follow-the-dot pattern is fragmented for these transferred Moscows one or two-maybe three-places linked to each other at a time. Not a very cohesive group as a single unit but certainly a group of similar stories deserving of a classification category of their invoking the image of Moscow of the rest of the Moscows, a large group was named simply for the Russian city. Often in the l9th century, exotic names were popular as many new communities popped up across the country. Post office regulations required that there be only one of each place name in a state (Stewart 1970).

All localities in the following list, therefore, are approximate. No marked or monumented point has been established by any government agency as the geographic center of either the 50 states, the conterminous U.S., or the North American continent.
