My name is Ed Amundson and I have served as the Chair of the National Education Association’s (NEA) Caucus for Educators of Exceptional Children for seven years. I speak to you today not only in this capacity, but as a teacher with years of hands-on classroom experience with special needs students. I have taught for over 20 years in California’s Sacramento City Unified School system, working with learning disabled students in reading, English, and government studies. I previously worked with severely disabled students in San Mateo County. I have a Master’s degree in special education, and am credentialed in both general and special education. The members of the National Education Association – like all of my colleagues throughout my nearly 30 years of teaching are committed to providing the best possible education to all students, including those with disabilities. NEA has long supported the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) a good law that holds a lot of promise. Unfortunately, lack of information, inadequate funding, and a misplaced emphasis on paperwork rather than on teaching have created onerous burdens for educators and have jeopardized the education provided all students.

Special Education Teachers Mrs. Allison Owens Mrs. Owens received both her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Special Education from FSU. She is certified K-12 in Learning Disabilities, Emotional Disturbances, and Varying Exceptionalities. She has had experience with autistic children, as well as those with Downs Syndrome, and has taught in self-contained, resource and inclusion settings. Mrs. Owens transferred to Hawks Rise from DeSoto Trail Elementary, where she taught special education students for the past three years. She completed her student teaching internship at Springwood Elementary and teaching practicums at various local elementary schools. She also served on the staff of the After School Program at Apalachee Elementary. Mrs. Owens has a heart for helping others, as demonstrated by her volunteerism. She has been very active in the youth ministry program at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, designing youth-teen leadership programs and delivering presentations to large groups. She currently serves as President of the local Tallahassee chapter of the Chi Omega Sorority Alumnae Group. She has been married for almost four years to her husband Curt, a computer software salesman. She has one son, Grayson, who is 17 months old.
