Alabama Genealogy
The French owned what is now Alabama in the early to mid-1700s, with settlement near Mobile as early as 1711. The British took over from 1763 to 1783, when the area around Mobile became part of Spain, while the remaining part was claimed by Georgia. By 1798 Georgia gave up its claims and the northern part of the area became part of Mississippi Territory. After the War of 1812, when the United States took Mobile from Spain, settlers began pouring in, bringing their slaves with them. Alabama became a territory in 1817 and achieved statehood in 1819. In 1861 Alabama seceded from the Union and contributed some 100,000 men to fight in the Confederate cause. It was readmitted in 1868.
