Montgomery County is the fourth largest of the 67 counties in thestate of Alabama. Copyright © 2000 Montgomery County, Alabama.
    http://www.mc-ala.org/history.htm
Montgomery County is the fourth largest of the 67 counties in the state of Alabama. Only Jefferson, Mobile, and Madison counties have larger populations. Montgomery County's population, according to the 1990 census was 209,085. Montgomery County has a very colorful background. Settlers first began to populate the area in the early 1800s. The county of Montgomery was created by an Act of the Legislature of the Mississippi Territory on December 6, 1816. It was carved out of Monroe County and originally embraced the whole of central Alabama, east of the ridge dividing the Tuscaloosa and Tombigbee Rivers from the Cahaba River, west of the Okfuskee and Coosa, and south of the mountains of Blount. However, it was soon subdivided and portions were set apart which made up Elmore, Bullock, and Crenshaw counties. Montgomery County was named in memory of Major Lemuel P. Montgomery, of Virginia, who fell at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, on March 27, 1814. He was shot in the head by a Redstick musketball, becoming the first man to die in the battle. A statue of Major Montgomery graces the entrance of the Montgomery County Courthouse, located at 251 S. Lawrence St. The lands of Montgomery County were put up for auction at the Federal Land Office in Milledgeville, Georgia in 1816. Larger parcels were sold to developers who subdivided the land into lots for urban commercial and residential use, predetermining a major city on the banks of the Alabama River at Montgomery.

Perry Volunteers in the Mexican War: Perry County, Alabama First Regiment of Alabama Volunteers 1846-1847 and the Mexican War Diary of Captain William G. Coleman – J. Hugh LeBaron. This is not the type of narrative one normally expects to find about the Mexican War. It is in a rare class because it is concerned with the Mexican War adventures of a single company of soldiers from Perry County, Alabama who left the comforts of home to serve their country in Texas and Mexico at a time of national crisis. They campaigned in Mexico at Matamoros, Camargo, Tampico, the siege of Vera Cruz, the Alvarado expedition and Jalapa, Mexico. The author traces the service of these Alabama patriots from the day they left home until their return and beyond. Genealogists and historians will find this volume both interesting and useful. Sketches of each of the volunteers are included along with Mexican War pension and Civil War service records. A full name index is provided along with useful maps, photographs, illustrations, bibliography and appendices containing letters, pensions and relevant government documents. This book also includes the unpublished Mexican War Diary of Captain William G. Coleman, the commander of the men from Perry County. Coleman’s diary is a new, untapped source of primary materials and a significant addition to Mexican War scholarship. 2002, 214 pp., fullname plus subject index, maps, illus., paper, $22.00 Some Alabama Pioneers

History HISTORY OF JACKSON COUNTY, ALABAMA
by John Robert Kennamer, Decatur, Al 1935: Condensed by Josephine Lindsay Bass on July 26, 1996.
The earliest white trappers and hunters to visit this territory would often build a hut for shelter and after a short time return laden with his furs and skins to the markets on the eastern coast. His only neighbor was the Cherokee Indian with whom he exchanged knives, guns, and other articles for skins and furs. None of these has left us a record who was first to visit this land. It is said David CROCKETT left his name on a tree in upper Paint Rock Valley, but he has left no record of his impression as he stood upon some lofty hill-top in the wilds that later became Jackson County. The valleys of the Tennessee, Paint Rock and the low level lands lying along Crow, Mud and Sauta Creeks were covered with dense cane-brakes, brushwood and briers matted together with vines; and towering above all this were large oak, poplar, gum and other trees, with a lake or lagoon here and there. The ridges and coves which were bordered by the Cumberland, Sand, and Gunter's Mountain were fertile and had a luxuriant growth of cane and forest. The mountain tops were better suited for the early settler to make his home, with no undergrowth except tall grass with trees far enough apart that one could drive a team and wagon for miles without a road. Deer were plentiful and turkeys as numerous as chickens are at the present time. Upon the waters bevies of ducks, geese, and other wild fowls dived and circled in play. One has described these mountains as follows: "The mountain air sighed through the tree tops as pure and sweet as the breath of a maiden; squirrels gambled in the forest trees; turkeys gobbled and strutted on the mountains; eagles screamed from their lofty perch on towering cliffs; and doves cooed their story of love on every hill and in every dale."

France Dauphin Island is rich in history dating from 1699 when the Spanish stood as the last foreign occupants. When the United States bought the Louisiana Territory in 1831, Dauphin Island was the capital. The Sun King of France - Louis XIV - first learned of Dauphin Island's bounty when his Fleur de Lis struck the sands in 1699. The early French inhabitants named their find "Massacre Island" for the mysterious pile of human bones they discovered there. The name was soon changed to honor the King's sons wife, the Dauphin of France. t wasn't long before Pelican Harbor, just south of the island, became an anchorage for the colonization of the new world. For a brief period the island served as capital of French Louisiana under Gov. Cadillac, whose dominion stretched all the way to the snow capped peaks of the Canadian rockies. Successive English and Spanish garrisons manned a wooden walled fort on the far eastern tip of the island. But only with the American control beginning in 1813 was a permanent battlement erected, Fort Gaines. During the Civil War flags of the Republic of Alabama and the Confederate States flew over the parapets. Dauphin Island has long intrigued the adventurer. The six flags that have claimed her shores color her past in a rich and dramatic historical tapestry.

U.S.S. Alabama BB-60 Histories The third ALABAMA (BB-60) was laid down on 1 February 1940 by the Norfolk (Va.) Navy Yard; launched on 16 February 1942; sponsored by Mrs. Lister Hill, wife of the senior Senator from ALABAMA; and commissioned on 16 August 1942, Capt. George B. Wilson in command. After fitting out, ALABAMA commenced her shakedown cruise in Chesapeake Bay on Armistice Day (11 November) 1942. As the year 1943 began, the new battleship headed north to conduct operational training out of Casco Bay, Maine. She returned to Chesapeake Bay on 11 January 1943 to carry out the last week of shakedown training. Following a period of availability and logistics support at Norfolk, ALABAMA was assigned to Task Group (TG) 22.2, and returned to Casco Bay for tactical maneuvers on 13 February 1943. With the movement of substantial British strength toward the Mediterranean theater, to prepare for the invasion of Sicily, the Royal Navy lacked the heavy ships necessary to cover the northern convoy routes. The British appeal for help on those lines soon led to the temporary assignment of ALABAMA and SOUTH DAKOTA (BB-57) to the Home Feet. On 2 April 1943, ALABAMA-as part of Task Force (TF) 22 sailed for the Orkney Islands with her sister ship and a screen of five destroyers. Proceeding via Little Placentia Sound, Argentia, Newfoundland, the battleship reached Scapa Flow on 19 May 1943, reporting for duty with TF 61 and becoming a unit of the British Home Fleet. She soon embarked on a period of intensive operational training to coordinate joint operations.

    "Friendliest City in the South"
Luverne, the Friendliest City in the South, was founded in 1889, one mile east of the Patsaliga River on the Alabama Midland Railroad in the central part of Crenshaw County. The primary figures in the founding of Luverne were M.P. Legrand, S.D. Hubbard, and George A. Folmar who purchased land surrounding the railroad, which would become the site of the new town. Luverne grew very quickly due to its advantageous location relative to other more established communities in the county. By 1890, it boasted nineteen businesses and a population of approximately 1,000 people. In 1893 a vote by the people moved the county seat from Rutledge to Luverne where a new courthouse was constructed. The booming young town which just four years earlier was a pine forest had become the center of business, government and social events for Crenshaw County. Early History of Luverne, Alabama
