THE IMPACT OF HURRICANE OPAL ON THE ALABAMA PECAN INDUSTRY
Author(s):
WOOD BRUCE W
Interpretive Summary:
Stability of pecan production and quality are major factors limiting the development of domestic and international markets. An assessment of the impact of hurricane Opal on the Alabama pecan industry indicates that while the total effect on the U.S. industry is probably minor, Alabama's yield will be greatly diminished for several years. The crop damage caused by Opal illustrates the vulnerability of the southern pecan industry to future hurricanes.

IMPACT OF HURRICANE OPAL ON THE ALABAMA PECAN INDUSTRY
Author(s):
WOOD BRUCE W
Interpretive Summary:
Instability in production and quality of pecan meats is a major barrier to the developmental domestic and import markets for pecan. Recent hurricane damage to Alabama pecan orchards impacts pecan markets. The effects of the recent hurricanes, especially "Opal", on Alabama orchards are documented. The Alabama pecan industry was severely damaged and will have production reduced by about 50 percent for the next 5 to 10 years but should produce higher quality nuts. The potential for an increase in the frequency of hurricanes is expected to reduce Alabama's long-term significance in total U.S. pecan production.

David T. Day, Chief of Division of Mining Statistics and Technology
Department of the Interior, United States Geological Survey
Government Printing Office, Washington, D. C., 1887.
Excerpts from the chapter on “Structural Materials,” by William C. Day “This period of general depression was, however, followed by one of the greatest activity, and while it is true that many building enterprises contemplated at the beginning of the year were abandoned and not taken up again in 1886, still the fact remains that at the close of the year the showing made by the principal cities of the country was a large increase in the amount of building done, as compared with 1885. “The kind of buildings most extensively erected during this period of activity consisted of residences, the demand for which, in view of our rapidly increasing population, is naturally at all times imperative.
