    Birmingham Public Library

The Birmingham Public Library was established in 1883 as an adjunct of the city's public schools. The library was later moved to City Hall, where both the structure and the collection burned in a great fire in 1925. An impressive neo-classical building of Indiana limestone was completed in 1927 and served as the central facility of the Birmingham Public Library for 57 years.

EDITORIAL by Ruth C. Carter An Electronic Interface to AACR2 By Mavis Molto ( Westridge School for Girls ) and Elaine Svenonius ( Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Los Angeles
ABSTRACT. The purpose of the project was to explore ways of reconfiguring AACR2 for use in an automated environment. A subset of AACR2 title proper rules for books was chosen for analysis. A functional classification of the rule subset was developed, based on the four facets: Source, Choice, Form, and Definition. The rules were also classified according to whether they were core or peripheral. A prototype electronic interface was then developed for searching and displaying the classified rules. The greatest problem in the rule reconfiguration stemmed from the structural problems of AACR2: rule groupings combining multiple subfacets under a single rule; rule redundancy; and rule scatter, between chapters, and between sections of chapters and appendices. February 10, 2000 Meeting with the Board The Reception The Program Montgomery Trip ... Return to Alabama Chapter site Prelude Introduction/Background As background to this event, it should be noted that each year, SLA sponsors chapter visits by the Association President or President-elect and SLA Chapters are eligible for a visit once every three years. Last year (1998-1999), our Chapter President, Jason Burnett, had requested and was granted permission for a Presidential visit which would have taken place October 1998, during a joint meeting with the Law Library Association of Alabama. Everything was planned and in place until Hurricane George swept through Orange Beach, Alabama and effectively cancelled our meeting. February 10, 2000 For me, the day began with pushing aside pre-event jitters and nervous anticipation. It was about noon by the time I arrived at The Tutweiler Hotel, downtown Birmingham, with our Welcome Basket. To my surprise, Donna had already arrived and was standing at the reception desk. So, I handed her the basket as we went upstairs to call the airport and inform Melanie that Donna was already at the hotel. (There had been a mix-up in communications on my part.) Since the weather was exceptionally nice, even for Birmingham in mid-February, Donna and I walked through Linn Park, passing the Jefferson County Courthouse, to make our way to the Birmingham Museum of Art. After a leisurely lunch and quick tour of the Museum, we headed back to the hotel to see if Donna’s luggage had arrived. Yes, the unthinkable had happened Donna’s luggage did not arrive on the same airplane as she did. However, after several telephone calls, the airline finally decided to forward her luggage to the hotel in time for Donna to get ready for the evening event.

    (205) 348-8320 (fax) UA Libraries Survey Yields Positive Results TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - A survey conducted recently by The University of Alabama Libraries indicates that students and faculty are satisfied with the libraries' current 100 hours of operation per week, and that they would prefer that library resources be spent on books, journals and electronic services rather than on additional library hours. Since the majority of those polled were satisfied with the current hours, no change will be made in the libraries' schedule at this time. The survey, commissioned by the libraries through the Capstone Poll, in UA's Institute for Social Science Research, was conducted during the spring 1997 semester. A random sampling of students and faculty participated in telephone question-and-answer sessions about library hours and services, said Kate Ragsdale, planning officer for the University Libraries. Participating in the telephone survey were 662 undergraduate students, 253 graduate students and 102 faculty members. The student sample was drawn randomly from the total number of undergraduate, graduate and professional students currently enrolled at the University.
