Tools University of Alabama Corps of Cadets Monument to the University of Alabama Corps of Cadets The University of Alabama, located in Tuscaloosa, adopted a military curriculum in 1860 under the leadership of the school’s president Doctor Landon C. Garland. To help gather information for the development of the university’s new course of study, Garland toured West Point, Virginia Military Institute, the Citadel, and Nashville’s Western Military Institute. After approval of the transformation of the University of Alabama into a military school by the Alabama Legislature, the university had an initial enrollment of 137 cadets. Garland became the superintendent of the University Corps of Cadets, and received the rank of Colonel. Later in the Civil War, John Murfee was named Commandant of Cadets. The newly developed military program of study was implemented under the model used at West Point. The cadets had West Point style uniforms, with gray woolen jackets and pants. To train on the basics of military study, the university cadets had two six pound cannons and antiquated Springfield rifles. Cadet rank for the University of Alabama military students ranged from Cadet Corporal to Cadet Captain, and they learned the basics of such topics as infantry tactics and artillery. The University of Alabama retained its classical subjects of study such as Latin, Greek, Chemistry, Math and Rhetoric. Additionally, the Corps of Cadets was divided into battalions, with four companies in each battalion. The cadets practiced drill on the original university quadrangle.

    What to Expect
Air University, Maxwell Air Force Base, provides a very large number of officer students requiring annual rentals. This factor, along with other short term living requirements in the area, help to create a somewhat inflated rental market. The military schools start during July and August. September would be a renters market with homes not already rented looking forward to a cold, lonely, pay less, winter unless rented. Renters start looking for rental properties in early spring or just after Easter for the summer. So if you wait until June, most of the better properties will have been rented.
An investor has the goal of obtaining 1% of the value of the house as monthly rent. This would be optimum and many owners will take less. Very General Guidelines with many exceptions: $400 - trailer, $500-$600 apartment or very small house, $700-$900 3-4 bedroom house, $1000+ may include pool, covered parking extra space etc. Houses with covered parking or garages are in short supply among rental properties but additional storage can be obtained in rental storage units some are now even climate controlled. Maxwell Air Force Base Housing Office has an information page which discusses average rental costs and follows with some suggestions on signing a lease.

Who Pays? It is a interesting concept "who pays closing costs". How many people bring a check to closing? Since the buyer is paying for the house, the buyer will be paying the closing costs either directly or indirectly when they are included into the price of the house. The real question, has the seller included the closing costs in the price of the house and if so how much. The tradition exists in this area for many of the home sellers to include the closing costs in the asking price of the house. This becomes a matter of negotiations. Before making an offer find out what is included in the price of the house. If closing costs have been included, how much? What are the closing costs The following is a list of closing costs which can be expected to be paid by either the seller or the purchaser. These items are itemized on the

Marion Military Institute, the oldest military junior college in the nation, was established in 1842 as “Howard English and Classical School” by the Alabama Baptist Convention. In 1887 the Baptist State Convention decided to move the college to Birmingham. Its President, Colonel James T. Murfee, decided to continue a school at Marion. Thus, property was transferred to a self-perpetuating Board of Trustees, and a charter for a private, non-profit educational institution was granted by the State of Alabama.
Since 1887, MMI has been a military school. At the turn of the century, considerable effort was devoted to patterning the school after prominent English schools. In fact, literature of the period details the effort to make Marion the “Eton of the South.” The first World War interrupted this plan, and Marion developed as a military high school and junior college. Although Junior and Senior Army ROTC has been an integral part of the institute, emphasis on academics always has been, and remains, the essence of the school.
Preparation for the nation’s service academies has been a specialized part of the programs offered since 1910. Today, the General Bruce K. Holloway School of Service Academy Preparation, the oldest such program in the nation, utilizes Marion’s sound academic curriculum and outstanding ROTC program to provide extraordinary preparation for students seeking appointments to the service academies. The fact that over 200 generals and admirals began their military education here, ably attests to the effectiveness of the program.

In an effort to save defense dollars, the Department of Defense announced it is looking at ways to transfer schoolchildren attending DoD schools in the United States to local public schools. Some analysts fear the move, if implemented, could result in the closing of schools with a proven track record of academic success and send the students to inferior public schools. Mike Antonucci, director of Education Intelligence Agency, a private research firm, said he supported the effort to cut federal dollars from education. But the Defense Department could look at more appropriate ways to cut costs, including expensive weapons systems, pay raises and bureaucracy, and not its exemplary school system, Antonucci said.
