CONSERVATION COMMISSIONER TAKES POST MONTGOMERY – Barnett Lawley took the oath office today and assumed the job of Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Governor Bob Riley praised his top pick for the cabinet level post. “Barnett has dedicated countless hours and tireless energies to preserving our state’s natural resources and promoting conservation efforts,” Riley said. “Now he has agreed to devote these energies and efforts to fulfilling the mission of the Department of Conservation so that we may preserve our environment for our children and grandchildren to enjoy.” The 57-year-old graduated from Auburn University in 1967 with a degree in Business Administration. The Pell City native recently retired as president and owner of the M.B. Lawley, Inc. petroleum company, a position he held for more than 30 years. While with the company, he served as president of the Alabama Oilmen’s Association and was the group’s legislative chairman for 21 years. The group honored him as Oilman of the Year three times. Lawley has already begun working with the Department’s employees in improving the Alabama State Parks’ infrastructure and promoting the many conservation-related activities that Alabama offers. “As Conservation Commissioner, I look forward to improving the facilities at our state parks so that Alabama citizens can fully take advantage of these treasures,” Lawley said. “And I look forward, as well, to opening the doors of hunting and fishing opportunities across the state so that a new generation of hunters and fishermen can enjoy our natural resources.”

On March 27, 1814 General Andrew Jackson with troops from the 39th US Infantry and the Tennessee Militia, aided by Lower Creek and Cherokee Indian allies, defeated Chief Menawa and the Upper or Red Stick Creeks. The Red Sticks fought behind a large wooden barricade they had built across a peninsula formed by the "horseshoe" shaped bend of the Tallapoosa River. This was the final battle of the Creek War of 1813-14 and was part of the larger, War of 1812. This 2040 acre park preserves the site of the battle. Located in Daviston, Alabama.

ROBERT FALLS Is a full-time professional wildlife and nature photographer, based in the Birmingham, Alabama area, with more than twenty years experience. His work has been published in every form currently available, including CD ROM and internet, and has been included in numerous books. His publishing credits are numerous and listed elsewhere on this page. "My extensive experience in nature and wildlife photography has endowed me with a broad based knowledge of these fields, yet I feel that I learn something from every image that I create. If nothing else, it teaches me that humankind still has a great deal to learn about our environment. My heritage is part Cherokee, and I think we could all benefit from Native American ideas about living on, and with, the 'Mother Earth.' "A friend, who is associated with the Alabama Museum of Natural History, once stated that we silly humans 'are more concerned with fashion, or soap operas on television, than we are about the environment in which we live.' I think he has hit right on the mark! My observations of our natural world indicate that our mindless development of the land and consumption of its resources are approaching disaster proportions. If we do not begin a responsible stewardship of our environment, a day will come when we all will live in a 'virtual world' whether we wish to or not."

(Reuters) January 17, 2002 - The former home of Rosa Parks, the U.S. civil rights pioneer who sparked the landmark 1955-56 Montgomery bus boycott, has been named an official historic national landmark, a U.S. official said on Wednesday. The building at 620-638 Cleveland Court in Montgomery was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, said Edson Beall, a historian with the U.S. National Park Service, which oversees the register. Beall said the designation would protect the building from being torn down or altered as a result of federally funded projects. Local housing officials plan to hang a certificate in the building acknowledging Parks. Parks was living in an apartment in the building when she was arrested on Dec. 1, 1955, for refusing to give up her seat to a white person on a public bus.
