Regions has pursued growth primarily through acquisitions, welcoming upwards of 80 smaller banks into its fold in the past five years. To accommodate its rapid expansion and to assimilate banks with disparate technologies and business practices, Regions needed to adopt uniform, flexible, and cost-effective information technology (IT) throughout its operations. It chose a client/server environment based on Microsoft BackOffice Server, a decision that has enabled Regions to become more efficient and competitive.

Agencies In Alabama Will Receive $2.5 Million To Feed, Shelter Homeless Atlanta, GA, January 8, 2002 -Victims of non-disaster emergencies in Alabama will be able to receive help because of $2,518,550 from the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) for fiscal year 2002. "This money will help people with non-disaster related economic emergencies so they will not become homeless or go hungry," said Kenneth O. Burris, Jr., regional director for the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Region IV office in Atlanta. "The program is one of the best examples of a public/private partnership working to help people who truly need help." Each year the Emergency Food and Shelter Program National Board develops a formula for distributing the funds based on the national unemployment and poverty rates. The EFSP National Board is composed of representatives from the Salvation Army, American Red Cross, Catholic Charities USA, Council of Jewish Federations, The United Way, and The National Council of Churches. A representative from the Federal Emergency Management Agency chairs the National Board. A local board in each county or city jurisdiction receiving EFSP funds determines how they will be spent. This may include such things as providing food, in the form of served meals or groceries; lodging in a mass shelter or hotel; one month's rent or mortgage payment; one month's utility bill; or minimal repairs to allow a mass feeding or sheltering facility to function during the program year. Except for the chairmanship, the composition of the local board mirrors the National Board.

Volume 45 Number 2 Summer 1998 Recreational Fishing on Alabama's Public Waters Netting BIG Returns Chris Hyde, Rebecca Travnichek, and Howard Clonts A labama has tremendous recreational fishing resources. Public waters of the state total more than one million surface acres, and there are 150,000 additional surface acres of private impoundments. Until recently, little was known about the economic benefits that recreational fishing provides to the economy of Alabama. A recent AAES study indicates that in 1994 total economic activity from fishing was estimated at $2 billion. For the study, a questionaire was mailed to a random sample of 1994 Alabama resident anglers. Survey respondents were asked about numerous fishing-related issues as well as sociodemographic questions. A total of 403 useable surveys were collected. A spending distribution plan was used to determine the transfer of wealth among the four regions and an input-output simulation plan was used to estimate economic impact of recreational fishing in Alabama. Results showed that Alabama's economy gained direct spending of $1.3 billion from the fishing activities of 695,558 resident anglers and 99,356 nonresident licensed anglers. The recreational fishing industry also was found to provide a substantial number of jobs to the citizens of Alabama. Expenditures by licensed anglers in Alabama sustain an estimated annual work force of 36,539 employees with annual earnings of $600 million.

Allegheny Mountains, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia
The Allegheny Mountains, also called the Alleghenies, are part of the Appalachian chain. The Alleghenies run roughly north-north-east to south-south-west, parallel to and west of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Pennsylvania , western Maryland and western Virginia
    Baja California or Lower California
Baja (pronounced baa-haa) California, also known as Lower California, isn't in California , or indeed even in the United States at all. Baja California (or Lower California) is the long, thin peninsula which runs south for about 760 miles from southwestern California and is part of Mexico. It is almost completely separated from the main part of Mexico by the Gulf of California. Baja is Spanish for drop or fall.
    Beringia
A name occasionally used to refer to the historical Bering Land Bridge (also sometimes called the Siberian Land Bridge) between Alaska and the northeastern tip of Siberia which existed at various times during the most recent ice age and which is now submerged under the Bering Strait, and the land immediately adjacent to it. According to a widely held theory, people migrated from Asia into North America via this land bridge and their descendants became Native Americans. I don't know if the similarity of name with Tolkien's land of Beleriand, part of Middle-Earth which was drowned at the end of the First Age, is purely coincidence or not.

Timber Mart-South Area Conversion Weights for Timber and Log Prices
    Jeff Prestemon and John Pye
    PURPOSE:
For over twenty years, Timber Mart-South (TMS) has been distributing to subscribers prices of various wood products from southern forests. These long term price series have been a critical resource for forest economics research into timber price and supply trends in the Southern United States (although other sources are available ). Price data are based on periodic surveys of timber buyers across the South, aggregated into Timber Mart-South's own substate regions. Time series analyses rely on consistent temporal and spatial reporting units, but these units have not been consistent over the entire period. In the beginning of 1988 the reporting frequency changed from monthly to quarterly, a change which can be readily addressed through a variety of established statistical techniques. A more significant statistical challenge is Timber Mart-South's change in 1992 from (typically) three reporting regions per state to two. We developed conversion tables to address this change in reporting areas, permitting longitudinal analyses of the current two regions per state but extending back to the beginning of Timber Mart-South's reports in 1976. The conversion figures provided assign product prices from a discontinued area to each of the two remaining areas in the state based on county-level timber removals. Timber removals were obtained from the
