Alabama Prospective Teacher Testing Program: The Alabama State Department of Education has been developing a testing program for prospective teachers as a precondition for certification to teach in Alabama as indicated in a July 3, 2001 notice about the program. The July 3 notice indicated that the test requirement was planned to be effective on May 1, 2002 or thereafter. The testing activities have progressed on schedule for a first administration on December 7th 2002 pending approval of the testing program by the State Board of Education. You are subject to meeting the test requirements if you are a prospective teacher completing a class B (bachelor's degree level) or Alternative Class A (master's degree level) teacher though other alternatives and preliminary routes on or after January 1, 2003. In addition, individuals who are seeking to reinstate certificates that have lapsed more than six months are also subject to meeting the new test requirements. If you will be applying for certification between January 1, 2003 and August 31, 2003 you will be required to successfully complete the Reading for Information test and the Applied Mathematics test. Individuals applying for certification on or after September 1, 2003 will be required to successfully complete the Reading for Information test, the Applied Mathematics test, and the Writing test.
