National Service in Alaska
Getting things done in Alaska. More than people of all ages and backgrounds are helping to solve problems and strengthen communities through national service projects across Alaska. Serving through local nonprofits, schools, religious organizations and other groups, these citizens tutor and mentor children, coordinate after-school programs, build homes, organize neighborhood watch groups, clean parks, recruit volunteers, and accomplish other things to improve communities. This year, the Corporation for National and Community Service will provide more than to support Alaska communities through three national service initiatives: AmeriCorps: This year AmeriCorps will provide more than 400 individuals the opportunity to spend a year serving in Alaska communities. In return, AmeriCorps members receive an education award of up to $4,725 to help pay for college or pay back student loans. To date, more than

ROPE - Rural Outreach Prevention Education AmeriCorps Program The Need: Sadly, Alaska has the highest rate in the United States for youth who are out of school and not working, the highest teen suicide and violent death rate in the country, and a school dropout rate among Alaska Natives that is double the rate for Caucasians. These three statistics reflect the need for strategies that keep youth connected to positive people and activities in Alaska. The Rural Outreach Prevention and Education (ROPE) program is a regional effort that focuses on providing education and training to youth in Southeast Alaska that increases academic success and resiliency skills. The Rural Outreach Prevention Education (ROPE) program is a host agency program that places AmeriCorps Members with schools and prevention agencies that serve youth in rural and Hub communities (i.e. larger communities that provide services to surrounding villages). The service activities that Members perform include; tutoring (school and after-school), after-school academic and social enrichment activities, family literacy focused on school readiness for pre-schoolers, volunteer recruitment/coordination, prevention education/training, organizing service projects, and summer school and activity clubs. These activities are designed and coordinated to address needs related to academic achievement, youth empowerment, and social enrichment. SAGA has been operating AmeriCorps programs since 1994. This, however, is the first year for the ROPE Program. It represents the efforts of a variety of education and prevention programs working together to address critical needs in Alaska. The ROPE AmeriCorps members will be part of creating a new and innovative program that will provide both worthy challenges and incredible opportunities. We are looking for ten inspired people who like being in on the ground floor of things and enjoy working together through the challenges to build a lasting program that makes a difference in people's lives.

US State Government Aid The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is used to apply for most state loan, grant and scholarship programs, in addition to the federal loans and grants. When you submit the FAFSA to the US Department of Education, they forward the information on the form to the state student assistance agency. Each state has a different FAFSA submission deadline. If you submit your FAFSA by March 1, you will be in time for all state deadlines, other than Michigan. If you miss the deadline, you will be ineligible to receive state aid for the entire academic year. Procedures for applying for state prepaid tuition programs and the national guard differ from state to state. The amount of information provided on the state web sites varies from state to states. Some states provide comprehensive information about residency requirements, loan, grant, scholarship and prepaid tuition programs and other state aid programs. Others provide minimal information. We recommend visiting the sites for both your state of residence and for the states of the colleges to which you are applying. A B C D ...
