The enjoyment of birding in Alaska is enhanced by learning where and when to find the birds one is searching for. Proper trip planning can maximize one's chances at seeing a high number of bird species during a trip to Alaska. Alaska's range of natural habitats - arctic, tundra, boreal forests, rainforest, and seacoasts - reflects a wide diversity of ecosystems and therefore, bird species. The diversity of habitats and the migration patterns to Alaskan breeding grounds offer a magnificent display and an amazing opportunity to see birds in their breeding plumage that many birders rarely get to observe. Alaska attracts birds from many areas of the world, including South America, Asia, Africa, and Antarctica. Migration allows birds to capitalize on abundant food sources available during the brief summer season. Alaska's bird checklist includes 445 documented species and an additional 35 unsubstantiated species. With over 130 million acres of federally protected lands, these protected habitats represent an important component of preserving many bird populations.

    34. The Russian Church And Native Alaskan Cultures
Color map. general Chart of alaska to Accompany Reindeer Report by Sheldon Jackson,LL.D. general Agent of education in alaska, 1904. Baltimore A. Hoen Co.
The Russian Church and Native Alaskan Cultures
    Native Education
Second in importance to the conversion of Native Alaskans was their education. On the founding of the first Russian colony on Kodiak Island in 1784, a school as well as a church was immediately established. Significantly, the school, supported by the Russian American Company, was bilingual, with studies in Russian and Kodiak (Eskimo). Bilingualism and the close connection between commerce and education were to be hallmarks of the educational system throughout the Russian American era and well into the American period. Undoubtedly the greatest educator in Russian America was Father Ioann Veniaminov, later Bishop Innokentii, who devised an alphabet for the Aleut language, expanded the educational system, and insisted that priests learn Native languages and customs. In 1841, he established the ecclesiastical seminary at Novoarkhangelsk (Sitka), which included coursework in Latin, trigonometry, navigation, medicine, and six years of Native languages. Local parish schools offered reading, writing, and arithmetic, Biblical history, penmanship, music, and, at times, as many as four languages simultaneously: Russian, Old Church Slavonic, English, and a Native language. Indeed, the stories of the many remarkable graduates of the Church system, mostly Creoles like the priest Iakov Netsvetov and the explorer-soldier Alexander Kashevarov, are among the most moving in the history of Russian America. The Russian American tradition of bilingualism is often contrasted with the American system, dominated by the Presbyterian minister Sheldon Jackson. Appointed the first Federal superintendent for public instruction in 1885, Jackson decreed that only English could be taught at schools. His antagonism toward the "Greek" church prevented his recognizing the unusual success of the bilingual Russian program, whose effects are still evident today.

Smoking Prevalence Among American Indian or Alaska Native Women
    • In 1998, smoking prevalence was highest among American Indian or Alaska Native women (34.5 percent), intermediate among white women (23.5 percent) and black women (21.9 percent) and lowest among Hispanic women (13.8 percent) and Asian or Pacific Islander women (11.2 percent).
Reported smoking rates have varied widely among American Indian tribal affiliations and by geographic location. The type of cigarettes, manner of inhaling, and numbers of cigarettes smoked vary widely. Fifty-four percent of American Indians live in urban settings, and another large percentage live on rural reservations.
Data from 1994-1996 show that smoking prevalence was the highest among American Indian or Alaska Native women living in the northern plains (43.5 percent) and in Alaska (40.6 percent), intermediate among women living in the East (33.4 percent) and the Pacific coast (30.6 percent), and lowest among women living in the Southwest (18.6 percent). Current Population Survey data for 1992-1993 showed a higher smoking prevalence among Alaska Native women (46 percent) than among American Indian women in the continental United States (35 percent).
