23. A Guide To Alaska In Maps CD-ROM
It was this ability to explore geographic features and create new maps that inspiredthe development of the CDROM version of alaska in maps. geography is all
http://www.ak-geo-alliance.org/akmaps/
What is "Alaska in Maps"? It is a thematic atlas of Alaska. In contrast to a topographic-type of atlas that emphasizes contour lines and selected settlement features, a thematic map offers maps of special topics. Examples of thematic maps found in "Alaska in Maps" include earthquakes, volcanoes, Native language regions, and health care facilities. "Alaska in Maps" was primarily designed for Alaska middle and high school students. However, it is also a useful atlas for anyone wanting to know about the geography of Alaska. Initially the atlas was published in a printed format. This is the traditional format for an atlas. It offers good looks, a good 'feel' and it is easy to use. But, could the atlas be transformed into a new electronic format as well? That was the challenge, and the result, in 2000, was the "Alaska in Maps CD-ROM" that you are using.
Why the CD-ROM version?
Enter the world of "GIS" or Geography Information Systems. This computer-based mapping system, once limited and arcane, is now commonly used in government, business, and schools of higher education. And it is moving onto the web and into K-12 schools.

Geography serves as a bridge between the natural and social sciences by studying the interrelationships between the earth's physical and biological systems, and how these environmental systems provide a natural resource base for human societies. Geographers are interested in patterns of human settlement, natural resources distribution, resources use and conservation. Geographers are interested in the sense of place among the peoples of the world. Geographic methodologies include observation, measurement, description and analysis of places or areas including their likenesses, differences, interdependence and importance. Geographic professions are diverse and include opportunities in mapping, remote sensing, demographics, international relations, landscape analysis, environmental assessment and planning, regional planning, and weather and climate analysis. Also, geography provides an excellent background for specialized or interdisciplinary graduate study. The geography B.A. degree program provides a broad cultural background in the liberal arts, a geographic perspective based on world regions, preparation for teaching geography, earth science or social science in elementary or secondary schools, and technical training for professional geographic work in government, business or industry.

Gustavus Alaska and Glacier Bay National Park lie between 58 and 60 degrees north latitude, just 60 miles west of Juneau, the state capital of Alaska.
Accessable only by plane or boat, this area of Alaska contains all the classic features that people from all over the world come to Alaska to see: Vast pristine wilderness areas, huge mountains, glaciers and iceburgs, rainforest and giant old growth trees, and healthy populations of fascinating wildlife species including brown bears, whales, and moose, among many others.
Glacier Bay and Gustavus have been as much a wonder to humans from the past as they are today...
The community of Gustavus lies on the historic outwash plain created by the Glaciers that once filled Glacier Bay . Only two hundred years ago it was primarily, one big “beach.” The town itself is barely one hundred years old, being legally homesteaded in 1955, but pre-Gustavus history speaks of native Tlingit Indians and others using the area for fishing, berry picking and other similar uses.
Gustavus used to be known as Strawberry Point, for reasons you probably can guess at. In 1925 Gustavus was officially given the name when a post office was established, and the government decided to list it as such, instead of what most locals preferred, Strawberry Point.
