Mountains and Islands The Geography of Petersburg, Alaska Petersburg is the only population center on Mitkof island, located appx. 100 miles south of Juneau and 100 miles north of Ketchikan in Southeast Alaska (the area is locally referred to as "Southeast"). It is a smaller island located in the middle of the Alexander Archipelago. Mitkof Island is mountainous and heavily forested, as is most of Southeast Alaska. The island's highest point is Crystal Mountain (3317 ft.), with the island's other peaks averaging around 2500 feet. The high rugged mountains of the coast range tower above Mitkof, while the fjords and glaciers of the mainland lay just a few miles to the east. Mitkof Island is approximately 24 miles long and 135,000 acres in size. Ground cover consists mostly of muskeg... a spongy, grassy bog which always stays wet. The island of Mitkof is geographically tied to the island of Kupreanof. The two are separated by over 20 miles of narrow tidal waterway, the Wrangell Narrows, which in some areas is barely wide enough to accommodate the Alaska State ferry. The Wrangell Narrows is a rich fast waterway, with tides varying from a high of 19 feet to a low of -4 feet in one day. The Wrangell Narrows meet Frederick Sound at the north end of Mitkof Island, where Petersburg is located. Frederick Sound is a major Southeast waterway which intersects with lower Stephans Passage and Chatham Strait. The rich waterway of Frederick Sound is home to vigorous runs of salmon, deep dwelling halibut, and summertime humpback whales. The Stikine-LeConte Wilderness Area and Petersburg Creek-Duncan Salt Chuck Wilderness are nearby.

INTRODUCTION While Mr. Clawson used his Middle to High School students to do the research, I decided to apply the guidelines with my class of second graders. I knew that it would be a daunting task for them alone so I teamed up with a colleague who taught 5th grade, Mrs. Patricia Wise. We used the Geoportrait Research Guide for grades 2-6 to lay our foundation. Since we both taught geography through the 5 themes of location, place, human/environmental interactions, movement and regions, we decided to pair our students up in a buddy system, a 5th grader with a 2nd grader, and have small groups working cooperatively to do the research. We wanted our students to have an understanding of each theme so we had them work on all five and later we met to consolidate information, edit, write drafts, edit some more and select the pictures to go with each section. However, before we could even get off the ground with the research and writing, we knew we had to prepare our students for what lay ahead of them. We chose to do this through literature and began with stories such as Letting Swift River Go by Jane Yolen and A River Ran Wild In the Spring of 1998

Well, now I have my "white" Christmases... also "white" Octobers, Novembers, Decembers, Januarys, Februarys, Marches and Aprils, and sometimes Septembers and Mays - EVERY YEAR!
