Location Structure Programs District Resources ... Employment Opportunities
Our Location:
Located on the southern coast of the Bering Sea, this region of southwest Alaska is bordered by the Bristol Bay to the south, the Kuskokwim Mountains to the west and north, and the Aleutian Range to the east. The beautiful Bristol Bay region is considered the "gateway" to the Wood-Tikchik Wilderness area. More king and red salmon are harvested in Bristol Bay than anywhere else in the world. Also nearby are the famous Walrus Islands. Located 350 miles southwest of Anchorage, Dillingham is the largest community in the region. It serves as a hub to the rest of Bristol Bay and offers banking services, a regional hospital, restaurants, stores, hotels, State police, a public radio station, and an extension campus for the University of Alaska. Jet service is available between Anchorage and Dillingham.

California Schools Get Hooked
By Robin Clewley Story location: http://www.wired.com/news/school/0,1383,45882,00.html 02:00 AM Sep. 10, 2001 PT No one likes waiting for audio and video files to download. Certainly not school teachers, who can't afford to waste precious classroom time while students stare at a half-blank computer screen, waiting for a virtual museum tour to finish loading. But if all goes as planned, K-12 students in California may soon have access to an array of rich content previously unavailable to them due to the limitations of slow bandwidth. The Digital California Project provides $3.6 million a year for a broadband network to wire all of the state's 11,000 K-12 schools. Funded by the state of California, the project is scheduled to be completed by June 2002. The DCP will work in conjunction with programs being developed by The Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California, a nonprofit organization that helps educational institutions acquire high-capacity Internet communications services.

Realistic Expectations
What can a web developer expect when developing for the K-12 [ Anchorage School District , where I work as a web developer.
Infrastructure
The Anchorage School District is one of the 100 largest districts in the US , in the most wired state in the country [
Hardware
Our platform mix is Mac heavy, and much of our hardware is very old. All told, we have roughly 18,000 computers [ ] throughout the district (including student lab machines, teacher desktop machines, and support personnel machines). Of those, the support/admin staff are likely to have the most up-to-date, which means anything less than three years old. Those machines are split fairly evenly between Dell and Apple. They account for about 3,000 of our machines. It is worth noting that in the last year, there has been a greater effort to move administrative staff to Windows. This has not We have about 2,500 educational iMacs (266 MHz G3, 64 mb RAM, 6 gig HD, OS 8.6 [although some have been upgraded to OS 9]) that were leased from Apple for three years. Those are the most current machines in the schools, aside from a few admin machines.

How to find online k-12 courses
More and more K-12 students and their parents are participating in distance learning or homeschool programs. Such alternatives to traditional schooling may include augmenting a traditional program with one or two courses offered at a distance or may mean obtaining a high school diploma without ever stepping foot in a classroom. We have listed some online and correspondence K-12 courses, as well as homeschooling resources, but strongly encourage the reader to ascertain the value of the curriculum for his or her own needs. This list is by no means complete as the number of institutions offering K-12 courses at a distance will continue to increase. Please see our article, Criteria for Selecting an Online Program , for tips on finding and evaluating online courses. Check out this article on "What makes a successful online student?" and take the "Is Online Learning for Me?" quiz. Also, check out the Star Schools Program section on this website for great distance learning K-12 programs!
