Gallo Although one must always be cautious of a commerical equipment provider touting the success of its technology, this remote area of Alaska appears to have benefited a great deal not only from the advent of distance learning technology but also the creativity which the schools have shown in implementing it effectively. The North Slope of Alaska has the largest school district in the United States. It encompasses 88,000 square miles of frozen tundra with few accessible roads and 2,000 students scattered throughout the region. Many of the students are native Inupiat tribe members who receive some instruction in their own language. The school district uses videoconferencing to provide greater accessibility of instruction locally to students who might otherwise have to attend boarding schools. It also allows some of the Inupiat language teachers who are not formally certified to participate in classes through the University of Alaska toward their teaching certification.

Community Profile Kodiak Island Borough School District (KIBSD), established in 1948, is a rural, public school district located on remote Kodiak Island, the second largest island in the United States, in the Gulf of Alaska. Kodiak Island Borough, which encompasses the entire island, has a population of 13,848. The island has only one, small city, Kodiak, where the majority of the population is concentrated. There are six outlying Alaska Native villages on the island, accessible only by boat or small plane. The village populations range from 41 to 276 persons. The only road system on the island is located near the City of Kodiak area and extends approximately 40 miles one way and 15 miles the other way from the City proper. The remainder of the island, with the exception of the six villages, is virtually uninhabited wilderness. Profiles of Kodiak Rural Schools Akhiok Akhiok is located on the southern end of Kodiak Island and was once a sea otter hunting settlement. The Virtual High Schools Lists Algebra Across The Wire The UT TeleLearning Center (UTTLC) at the University of Texas at Austin delivers six high school classes by audioconferencing . The classes include Health Science Technology Education, TeleLanguage (Spanish and German), TeleRap (a roundtable discussion for teenagers), and a special migrant student program called Algebra Across the Wire. All courses are approved by the Texas Education Agency, count toward graduation, and fulfill Texas essential elements. Algebra Across the Wire is funded by a Texas Education Agency Migrant Student Program contract. Migrant students usually withdraw from schools, attend classes in various states, and then return to their original school. Superintendents typically nominate one or two graduates, who are eligible for a $7,500 per year loan at any accredited University to pursue their teacher certification. Students must agree to return to Alaska and teach in a rural district. A portion of the loan is credited back to the student s annually, so at the end of their six years they will have received the full amount of the initial loan plus interest.
