Learn and Serve America (LSA) provides grants to schools, colleges, and nonprofits to support programs that enrich learning through community service. For example, students studying nutrition may put their knowledge into action by conducting food drives, teaching others about healthy diets, or creating community gardens. This approach to education, called service-learning, helps address community needs while developing students’ academic skills and the habits of responsible citizenship. In fiscal year 2001, LSA supported 2,500 service-learning programs that engaged approximately 1.5 million students.
The following is a list of the current Learn and Serve America tribal grants.

This project uses service-learning to implement two Alaskan villages’ goals of creating safe, efficient solid waste management and establishing a student-led informational and supportive system for neighboring villages’ clean-up efforts. Using a culturally relevant educational curriculum, K-12 students research, create and lead activities to clear traditionally used waterfront areas and trails. Community members’ ideas and plans for how to restore the natural beauty of their communities are implemented. Providing a link between past and present, students are placing educational signs along the trails to describe traditional, medicinal, and modern uses of plants and areas. Village residents are involved in the students’ activities, providing the historical knowledge and skills needed for environmental restoration.

NATIVE AMERICAN BOOKS is a section that contains hundreds of short reviews and longer illustrated review-essays about books by Native authors or on Native subjects, especially oriented to schools (and NA Studies courses). Books are reviewed for children (K - 4), Middle school (5 - 8), YA (highschool) and adult. Reference works, Native-centered Science, Art-craft sections too. A section with not too many entries lists Native xuultural curriculum-language materials (mostly for reference by curriculum developers) and another covers audio-visual aids: vids, computer software, films, tapes.Places to find hard-to-find children's books by Native authors. Unfortunately there has been nothing but trouble with this Lpage (basically the guy has turned it into a commercial service and to make sure he gets paid, the freebie one quits working all the time). Here's what you can TRY to get Indian keypals (most Indian schools so far do not have emailboxes for the kids). Access the various school webpages here, and email the computer teacher, whose name is (usually) on it for Webmaster. Ask if they are interested in keypals with your students, and how it should be arranged.
