Public and private universities and a large variety of vocational and business schools keep Anchorage’s young workforce (median age 32.7 years) well educated. Our local universities and colleges are often included in top national ratings for quality education, student satisfaction and quality of environment.
University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA)

In response to the rapidly evolving cargo industry and global economy movement, UAA added three Global Logistics degree programs to its curriculum studies in the fall of 1999. The long-term goal is to establish a logistics research center supported by a multidisciplinary baccalaureate program. AEDC is among those organizations helping to develop the curriculum for the Global Supply Chain Management Program and define its long-term goals.
UAA is home to one of only three Federal Aviation Administration certified training centers for control tower personnel and pilots in the nation. This facility runs a sophisticated virtual reality simulator that links the plane to the ground under real life conditions. Tours of this unique center are available.
Another University of Alaska campus, in Fairbanks, is home to the Arctic Region Supercomputing Center, one of the top 40 such sites in the world. The Cray T3E has 272 processors and 519 gigabytes in disk storage, enabling huge computational tasks involving up to 20 billion calculations per second.

The Sitka Community Association, presently STA, first hired Gary in the maintenance field in 1984. He first worked under the Job Training Partnership Act (J.T.P.A.) for the first summer and was then hired as the Maintenance Assistant soon after. He became responsible for maintaining the rental units on Alice and Charcoal Island, which consisted of twenty-seven or more buildings. He was responsible for maintaining several other buildings also. While working for Sitka Community Association (STA) Gary attended two vocational schools. The first one was in Seward, Alaska. At the Alaska Vocational Training Center (AVTEC) in Seward, Gary completed a Five-month course in Building Maintenance.
The second one was in Seattle, Washington. At the Oil Heat Institute of Washington, Gary completed a three-month course in boiler/furnace repair and also became certified as an oil-heating technician. Training from both schools has become very useful in his field. Since, Gary has also obtained his CDL class B License, Asbestos Certification, third class Boiler Operator's License and Coast Guard 25 ton Near Coastal License.

Funds Released for Alaska Native Education Programs The Department of Education has informed Senator Ted Stevens that several Alaskan groups and schools will benefit from funds he secured to implement the Alaska Native Education Equity Act. The funding was part of the Fiscal Year 2002 Labor and Health and Human Services Appropriations bill, which also funds the Department of Education. "I'm pleased to see these funds being awarded to Alaskan organizations and schools. Funds authorized through the Alaska Native Education Equity Act expand the educational opportunities for all Natives in our State and provide needed training for parents and teachers," said Stevens. The Alaska Native Education Equity Act, authored by Stevens, was included as an amendment in the No Child Left Behind Act, passed in December of last year. The amendment increased authorized annual funding and expanded activities authorized under the Alaska Native Education Act. Those receiving grants are: • $307,173 for the Sealaska Heritage Institute to develop curricula, lesson plans and teaching materials for Tlingit language partial immersion classes tailored to kindergarten, first grade and second grade, and to train prospective and current educators to use the materials.

For Immediate Release Stevens' Native Education Amendments Passed:
Bill Headed to the President for Approval The Senate today passed the No Child Left Behind Act, which includes an amendment authored by Senator Stevens to increase authorized annual funding and expand activities authorized under the Alaska Native Education Act. A related amendment cosponsored by Senator Stevens authorizes funding for educational, cultural, and apprenticeship programs at the Alaska Native Heritage Center and the Inupiat Heritage Center in Barrow. Stevens' amendments were originally offered during the Senate's consideration of the Better Education for Students and Teachers Act in June, which reauthorizes and restructures elementary and secondary education programs. This bill was conferenced with the House's version, where both of Stevens' amendments were retained, and the bill was renamed the No Child Left Behind Act. "I'm pleased that the Conference Committee agreed to retain these important amendments that expand the educational opportunities for all Natives in our State and provide needed training for parents and teachers," said Stevens. "My amendment also continues the Rose Cultural Exchange Program, which for the first time this year allowed students in urban areas of Alaska to go to school and live with Native students' families in the Bush." Activities authorized for funding through the Stevens amendment to the Alaska Native Education Equity Act:

Elliot was wrong. April isn't the cruelest month. January is with a Feb. 1 admissions deadline looming at several major universities. Now is the time for college-bound seniors to place their bets and roll the dice. Where should they apply? Where can they get accepted? How far into education debt will their families finally tumble? The getting-into-college game can be tricky, especially for Alaskans. As the cost of attending school Outside spirals higher and higher with out-of-state tuition, room and board hovering at $25,000 a year at the University of Washington, $34,000 at Notre Dame and $40,000 at Harvard the option of paying little to no tuition at a University of Alaska campus beckons even more.

Relocation Information The following has been prepared to give you an idea of who to contact to begin your research. We do not have a listing of jobs available in Alaska, nor do we know who is hiring. That is handled according to individual organizational needs as in the rest of the United States. If you are interested in jobs in a specific area, call information and ask for the phone number of the Alaska Employment Service in that town. It is difficult to comment on income. The income is not as high as it is often rumored in the Lower 48 states. There are many $6.25-$7.00/hour jobs in Alaska. In addition, the cost of living here is higher than many areas in the Lower 48 states. It would be wise to carefully consider the economics of Alaska while making your decision to relocate.
