LISTEN: Milosevic Retrospective
http://www.npr.org/ramfiles/atc/20020212.atc.14.ram

"All Things Considered" National Public Radio , Feb. 12, 2002
Noah Adams talks with Misha Gleny, author of The Fall of Yugoslavia: The Third Balkan War, about the indictments against Milosevic. The indictments cover the years from 1991 to 1999, and refer to incidents in Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovoina and Kosovo, including the destruction of Vukovar, the shelling and killings in Sarajevo, and the brutalities and rapes in a Kosovo village. While calling attention to specific indictments against Milosevic, Gleny explains the rise of Milosevic in the Balkans, and how his championing of a "greater Serbia" was a catalyst and a cause for the bloodshed in the region. Albanian Longevity Linked To Diet
2:15 p.m. EST (1915 GMT) December 22, 1997 NEW YORK — A 'Mediterranean diet' rich in olive oil, fruits, and vegetables may be helping the citizens of Europe's poorest nation, Albania, lead long, healthy lives. "(The) Mediterranean diet or its elements have repeatedly been shown to provide remarkable protection against chronic diseases,'' say Dr. Arjan Gjonca of the London School of Economics and Political Science, and Dr. Martin Bobak of University College London in the U.K. Their study, published in this week's edition of The Lancet, examined national death statistics and census data from the tiny European nation, located between western Greece and the Adriatic. Albania has only recently emerged from decades of rule by a Communist regime which allowed little contact with the West, and has one of the poorest economies in Europe. Today, the Albanian per capita gross domestic product (GDP) of $380 is the lowest on the continent (in contrast, U.K. per capita GDP equals $18,340). However, while Albania's infant mortality remains high, the researchers say average life expectancy for citizens surviving past the age of 15 is among the highest in Europe — 74.2 years for women, 67.8 years for men.
