Music in Albanian history and the figure of Scanderbeg
Territorially, Albanians belong to the Mediterranean world; in culture and religion they incline either to the West or to the East, though sometimes they show both Western and Eastern inclinations. This ambivalence is symbolised in the official crest of Albania, a double-headed eagle that faces both East and West. The existence of early music in Albania has been verified by archaeologists, who unearthed figures of people playing musical instruments, singing or dancing. As in many parts of the world, such figures have been depicted in mosaics or else engraved on pottery and stone. However, these antique figures do not necessarily reflect the indigenous culture of their time, since the remains of Greek and Roman amphitheatres are clear evidence of the presence of successful foreign civilisations. Possibly the earliest music that can been traced in the Illyrian territory was composed by Nicetas, often known as Nicetas Dardáni, a bishop in the city of Remesiana in Dardania, a region of Dacia, who is generally accepted to be the author of the Te Deum Laudamus (We praise Thee, O God). Sokoli has written much in defence of his theory that Nicetas, often called ‘a Dacian bishop at the opening of the fifth century’

(1500 A.D.- 1912)
The Ottoman Empire created a vast variation in Albanian culture and the adaptation to Ottoman life had important consequences in Albanian history. This was a time when Albanians thrived and continued to spread their power around the world.
If one could pinpoint a dark period in the history of Albania it would be under the communist dictatorship of Enver Hoxha. The end of WWII forced Albania into an escalation toward communism and shaped the darkest 40 years in its history.
(1991 - beyond)
The rapid development after communism of the Albanian state and the increasing modernization can only be accredited to the Albanians people's immense spirit and pride for their country.
In the creation of the modern independent Albanian state proved to be a real challenge for the Albanian people. Yet through the strong leadership of King Zog I, the Albanian People persevered.

Albania Information One of the smallest countries in Europe, Albania is also very mountainous and little known to outsiders. Predominately an Indo- European people, descendents of the ancient Illyrians, the Albanians are divided into two main groups: the Ghegs to the north of the Shkumbi River, and the Tosks to the south. Rome conquered the Illyrian Kingdom in 168 BC, and went on to rule for more than five centuries. Some of the emperors were even of Illyrian descent, as the region became a major transit route through Byzantium. As the Roman Empire declined, Goths, Huns, Bulgars, and Slavs all tried to fill the vacuum. Then came the Normans and the Serbs. After the collapse of Stephan Dushan's Serbian Empire, and the death of Scanderbeg, the feudal lords were soon overrun by the Turks. Albanian language and culture were suppressed for almost 400 years during Ottoman rule, although the Turks were never able to totally control the people.

    http://www.ahmp.org/Washtim7.html
Please find below: (1) A letter from the American Hellenic Media Project (AHMP), as published in The Washington Times on May 27th; and (2) The longer of two versions of the letter as submitted by AHMP. THE WASHINGTON TIMES Letters Thursday, May 27, 1999 Misstating history robs Greeks of heritage In his Op-Ed column on Kosovo ("In the land of Pyrrhus," May 13), Lowell Ponte mischaracterizes King Pyrrhus and his ancient kingdom, Epirus, as being part of "Albanian history." History, in fact, leaves no doubt that Pyrrhus, the land of Epirus and its people were Greek and clearly discernible from the Illyrians who inhabited an adjacent territory and who many believe were the ancestors of today's Albanians. That Albania has occupied the northern part of Epirus which still contains a Greek Orthodox majority in many areas despite decades of ethnic cleansing, pogroms, and institutionalized discrimination since 1913 should not mean that its Hellenic past should be appropriated retroactively into Albanian history. This is the same Orwellian logic that has been used to claim that Homer, the Byzantine Empire and St. Nicholas were Turkish or that the Indo-Europeans who invaded northern India were Germanic. It is not merely that nationalist sensitivities are offended by this forging of history. Renewed efforts by some to discredit Greek civilization or to disassociate it from its Hellenic identity in support of a Balkan agenda detrimental to the region's most democratic and egalitarian nation, European Union member Greece, explain why many Hellenes react with such alarm. It is a strategy with a long, sordid and successful history.
