Galaty will present a lecture about his studies, titled "Digging the Eagle: Archaeology in the Developing Nation of Albania," on Feb. 7 at 12:30 p.m. in Gertrude C. Ford Academic Complex room 215. The program is free and open to the public. "My lecture will focus on modern Albanian history and the difficulties of conducting archaeological research in a developing nation," Galaty said. "Albania shows us how difficult it is for a poor, developing country to create new economic and political institutions, basically from scratch." The lecture, which is sponsored by the Millsaps Forum Series, will be accompanied by the opening of a Lewis Art Gallery exhibit featuring Garett Holden's photographs of Albania. Holden, a freelance photographer, received his B.A. degree from the Art Academy of Cincinnati. The lecture will be immediately followed by a special gallery reception. "Holden's work is tremendous, depicting a country experiencing massive change," Galaty said. "Albania is an absolutely fascinating place, and it comes through in these photos. The photos document the challenges and rewards of practicing archaeology in such a setting."

This position was created based on a recent bequest received by the School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES). Alex Nash (formerly Naci, 5 April 1949 - 14 September 1995) was a university teacher and translator who also co-operated with the European Commission. His father was the private secretary of the former Albanian King Zog and the Nash's family emigrated with King Zog to England during World War II. By selecting Stephanie Schwandner-Sievers There are also efforts being undertaken to formalise links between SSEES and international scholars and students of Albanian Studies. Having received an invitation from SSEES, Dr. Bernd Fisher from Indiana University conducted research in England in June and July 1998 on British Albanophile movements and influences during the Second World War. Additionally, there are plans to integrate more Albanian students into SSEES. The IHRC Guide to Collections: Albanian American Collection Monographs Newspapers Serials Monographs Albanian American monograph holdings consist of approximately thirty five volumes. Two subject areas Albanian Orthodoxy and politics constitute the strengths of the collection. Of the three religions traditional to the Albanian American community Eastern Orthodoxy, Islam, and Roman Catholicism the IHRC collections highlight the first. WWI temporarily wiped away further moves for independence as Albania was occupied by Greece, Serbia, France, Italy and Austria-Hungary in succession. From 1920 to 1939 the country governed itself, but Ahmet Zogu, representing the landed aristocracy, went to bed with Mussolini's Italy. That move sprang back to hit him in the face when the Italians invaded at the outbreak of WWII. The communists, under Enver Hoxha, led the resistance against Italy and, after 1943, Germany. Look for the best fit between the years of the century and the years of the historical periods of that country's history. We normally observe the following two guidelines. When one period covers 51 or more years of a century (defining a century as the years ending in 00 to 99), we use that period, because it covers the majority of the century. For example, 946.9036 encompasses 1847-1910 in Portuguese history. Because this period includes 53 years of the 19th century, we use 946.9036 for 19th-century Portugal. If a period covers the first 50 years of a century, we use that period, according to the first of two rule. For example, 946.9032 covers 1640-1750 in Portugal, and 946.9033 covers 1750-1807. Eighteenth-century Portugal, therefore, is classified in 946.9032. Additional difficulties arise when a century is divided among three or more periods. For example, the 20th century in Albanian history is divided among four period subdivisions. The first 12 years of the century are included in 949.6501; the subdivision for 1912-1946 (949.6502) encompasses the following 34 years; the next 46 years of the century are covered in 949.6503, which has the caption "1946-1992"; and 949.6504 is for 1992 and after. We realize that users require more guidance in such instances, and we plan to add notes indicating where the centuries are to be classed in all doubtful cases to Edition 22, which will be published in 2003. History In September 1999, Donald Nelson and his co-workers began working in Bathore. Prior to this they had been providing relief supplies to several thousand Kosovar refugees living with Albanian families in the Tirana area. Arriving in Bathore they found an area suffering with severe social and economic problems. Donald and his co-workers found many children in the streets without any chance to attend school.They learned that this condition is because there is only one government school in the area. After consulting with the local Elder (elected representative of the locality), they made plans to open a much needed kindergarten. A building was selected in August 2000, and as soon as they started registration, the available places were filled up (on the first day of registration) and forty more children were placed on the waiting list. In January 2001, work was completed on an addition to the school building and another 40 children were able to attend. In March 2001 a team from the European Union's monitoring commission visited the school.

Recently released from the constraints of communism and years of oppression, Albania looked toward a growing future with capitalism. Teenagers embraced the music of Michael Jackson and Madonna, while the leaders welcomed the teaching of English, western business and agriculture. For a country that boasted an average income of $120 a year, hard work and the acceptance of the influences of their wealthier neighboring nations obviously looked to be able to open doors to more comfortable living. But so did the prospect of a high-risk pyramid scheme that many Albanians put all of their savings into. With the failure of the investments, some of which Albanians had bet on with their houses, Albania is now in decay. Civil war has broken out while citizens blame the government for encouraging the investments, and then not being able to pay what is deserved. Many have responded with a violent rebellion. Relatively unknown to Americans before, reports of violence fill the media almost everyday now in mediums ranging from CNN to local newspapers. Although most Americans view the news as remote, some see it as the destruction of what was once a home.

The 1345-start date is probably the Albanian population resistant to Serbian conquest by Dushan (since the Epiros list ends in 1340). Eventually in 1355 (upon Dushan's death), the armies of Balsha and Thopia would appear. Eventually Ottoman and Venetian elements would start appearing in the chieftains' armies. During Skanderbeg's reign, more mercenaries would begin to appear (more Venetians, Catalans, Hungarians, and Germans). Also there would be more use of gunpowder weapons present, namely handguns. Here is a list of the elements used in the Albanian army and their descriptions: Element Description (including general) These are light horse armed with a spear and sword and/or mace. Some may replace the spear with a crossbow or bow. They wear no armor and may carry a shield. Some chieftains may have Ottoman auxiliaries. These would be represented as Akinji (Ottoman raiders armed with bows). These are mostly peasants or lightly armed javelinmen with shields. As Ottoman auxiliaries these would be Azabs armed with bows or javelins. Also, these can represent Italian mercenaries either as crossbowmen or later handgunners. Hungarian jobbagy archers would be appropriate as mercenaries as well.

A few words about Albania, it's people and the effect they had on Mother Teresa's life P robably most people still don't know that Mother Teresa was born and raised by Albanian parents. To better understand how she was raised and what she was taught since at a young age, I included this paragraph that was written by Irene Grunbaum a holocaust survivor, one of the thousands of Jews that were protected and sheltered by the Albanian people during the second World War. "Farewell, Albania, I thought. You have given me so much hospitality, refuge, friends and adventure. Farewell, Albania. One day I will tell the world how brave, fearless, strong, and faithful your sons are; how death and the devil can’t frighten them. If necessary, I’ll tell how they protected a refugee and wouldn’t allow her to be harmed even if it meant loosing their lives. The gates of your small country remain open, Albania. Your authorities closed their eyes, when necessary to give poor, persecuted people another chance to survive the most horrible of all wars. Albania, we survived the siege because of your humanity.
