About Albania
Official Name: Republic of Albania (Republika e Shqiperise) Location: Albania is located in southeastern Europe (above the 40th parallel, North). It is bordered on the west by the Adriatic Sea. It touches Yugoslavia (Montenegro) to the north and east, Macedonia to the east, and Greece to the south and east. Land Area: 27,400 sq km (10,576 sq mi). Coast: 362 km (225 mi) of Adriatic coast. Climate: Albania has a mild climate, with cool, wet winters and hot, dry summers. Population: Over 3 million inhabitants, of which 30% are younger than 15 years old. Language: There are two main dialects of Albanian spoken in Albania: the Gheg dialect of central and northern Albania and the southern Albanian Tosk dialect. The Tosk dialect has been adopted as the official language of Albania. Many Albanians also speak Greek; Italian and English are also widely spoken. Religion: The Muslim faith predominates in Albania. Albanian Orthodox and Roman Catholic faiths are practiced by most of the rest of the population. From 1967 to 1990 (under Communist rule), religious observance was banned. Government: Albania is now a democracy, after many years of communist rule. The first democratic elections were held in 1991, and an Albanian constitution was adopted in 1998. Albania has a three-branch government: an Executive Branch, consisting of the President, Prime Minister, and a Council of Ministers; the Legislative Branch, consisting of the 155-member People's Assembly; and the Judicial Branch, consisting of the Supreme Court.

  • Ancient Albania : Illyrians, the roman empire and the Bulgarian domination Meanwhile, when the Venetians were aproaching the coasts of Albania, again Bulgarians imposed their dominion in most of Albania. In 1346 Stefan Dusan, Emperor of Serbia, conquered Albania and achieved his ambitious design of becoming the emperor of the Serbs, the Albanians, the Romanians and the Bulgarians. Later on, the Balsha dynasty was established in Scodra and Durres. In the XIII century, Elena, daughter of the Prince of Epir married Manfredi, King of Sicily and and brought with her dowry some of the Albanian territories. When in 1266 Manfredi lost the war to Carl of Ange, Emperor of Naples, all Manfredi's territories passed to Naples. In 1272 Carl of Ange was self-declared King of Albania. With the decline of the Serb Empire, Albanian Princes gained authority. The Topia family governed a vast part of central Albania, with Durres as the capital. Karl Topia resisted to Serb attacks in 1388. In North-Western Albania, Venetians gained some territories which were soon lost with the advent of a new power: the Ottoman Empire.

    COLONISATION OF KOSOVA

I n the latter part of the Middle Ages, Albanian urban society reached a high point of development. Foreign commerce flourished to such an extent that leading Albanian merchants had their own agencies in Venice, Ragusa (modern Dubrovnik, Croatia), and Thessalonica (now Thessaloníki, Greece). The prosperity of the cities also stimulated the development of education and the arts. Albanian, however, was not the language used in schools, churches, and official government transactions. Instead, Greek and Latin, which had the powerful support of the state and the church, were the official languages of culture and literature. The new administrative system of the themes, or military provinces created by the Byzantine Empire, contributed to the eventual rise of feudalism in Albania, as peasant soldiers who served military

Albanian is an Indo-European language spoken by about 6,400,000 inhabitants of the eastern Adriatic coast in Albania and also in neighboring Yugoslavia, principally in Kosova and Macedonia, west of a line from near Leskovac to Lake Ohri. There are perhaps 300,000 more speakers in isolated villages in southern Italy (Abruzzi, Molise, Basilicata, Puglia, and Calabria), and Sicily, and southern Greece (in Voiot’a, Attica, ƒvvoia, çndros, and the Pelop—nnesos) The origins of the general name Albanian, which traditionally referred to a restricted area in central Albania, and of the current official name Shqip or Shqip‘ri, which may well be derived from a term meaning "pronounce clearly, intelligibly," are still disputed. The name Albanian has been found in records since the time of Ptolemy. In Calabrian Albanian the name is Arbresh, in Modern Greek Arvan’tis, and in Turkish Arnaut; the name must have been transmitted early through Greek speech. Introduction Dialects History
