The Provincial Laboratory of Public Health for Alberta, Alberta, Canada; †The University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; ‡The Capital Health Authority, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada From December 1999 to April 2001, the greater Edmonton region had 61 cases of invasive meningococcal infection, two fatal. The outbreak was due to Neisseria meningitidis serogroup C, electrophoretic type 15, serotype 2a. Analysis of the strains showed that 50 of 56 culture-confirmed cases were due to a single clone and close relatives of this clone. This strain had not been previously identified in the province of Alberta dating back to January 1997. Neisseria meningitidis We report an outbreak of a serogroup C clone of N. meningitidis

Household Transmission of Streptococcus pneumoniae, Alberta, Canada
Proven or presumptive multidrug-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae pneumonia was diagnosed simultaneously in three married couples in Alberta, Canada. The pair of isolates from each couple had identical antibiotic resistance profiles, serotypes, and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns. One or more of these cases could have been prevented by S. pneumoniae vaccine. Outbreaks of Streptococcus pneumoniae (antibiotic resistant and nonresistant) have been reported from child-care centers, nursing homes, hospitals, military camps, homeless shelters, and penal institutions ( ). Simultaneous cases within households have rarely been reported ( ); such cases require common exposure and transmission, as well as similar likelihood of disease in the hosts or increased virulence in the pathogen. In December 1996 and January 1997, three married couples with multidrug-resistant S. pneumoniae (MDRSP) were admitted to Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary. The couples were not admitted on the same day. None of the couples lived with children, although couple C had daily contact with children. All patients received appropriate antibiotic therapy after their culture and antibiotic sensitivity results were known. We reviewed each patient's health record (

Call for Papers, Presentations, Panels and Participation Labour Culture – Union Culture – and the Culture of Resistance The advance of the labour and trade union movement has contributed an enduring legacy to the quality of life for all people in the modern age. Yet, the relation of this contribution has to date not been well articulated by social and cultural scholars. Previous generations of working people involved in such mass movements as the Chartist and Syndicalist movements in England and France of the nineteenth century fought bitter struggles with state and capitalist authorities to gain social rights and working standards often taken for granted. The political implications of these movements mark the wider social expression of working class interest, manifesting of a culture of organized resistance. This culture of resistance acts directly as the engine of labouring peoples' political interests world wide, forming the anarcho-syndicalist and non-market socialist movements of the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries. This series of panels and events explores the broad relational themes of these movements, providing a forum for the interchange of ideas and histories of the diverse range of working class culture and working class politics. We invite both academic and non-academic presentations on all aspects of trade union and labour culture, including their political and economic relation to past and present anarchist and socialist movements. Question periods and further on and off-campus discussion and educational forums will ensue.

PEACE BIOGRAPHY- ROBERT (BOB) STEWART, C.A., C.M.C.
Bob Stewart, a Chartered Accountant in public practice and Certified Management Consultant, has held many senior management positions in business and government over the past 27 years. Bob recognized, as do others, that the Culture of Peace Program is on the threshold of making a major impact pacifically, nationally and internationally, but is currently lacking direction and capacity. He has devoted himself to using his professional skills as a (general) manager and information manager to help advance this 'direction and capacity' by founding the Canadian Centres for Teaching Peace.. Bob has been a member of Rotary International, an organization with 1.2 million members world-wide and a mission of helping to advance peace and world understanding, since 1986, first in Yellowknife and currently in Okotoks, Alberta. As Chair of the Rotary District 5360 Urban Hope/Peace Plus Committee for the past 3 years he has been developing Member and Club interest in Building Peace in Our Communities and World. In February 1999, Bob has been appointed a Special Ambassador of the Rotary Peace Cities Project. Bob is also a Member of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO's National Working Group to promote the United Nations International Year for a Culture of Peace in 2000 and has developed one of the most comprehensive, plain language Peace and Non-violence web sites in the world as a resource for people who wish to become more active in building peace.
