    FIRST NATIONS: Aboriginal Canadians
"Long before the first European settlers crossed the Atlantic, the original citizens of Canada had a rich and vibrant culture, a profound spirituality and deeply held social values based on respect for the earth and all forms of life. The political structures that existed in the aboriginal nations were so highly developed that the Iroquois Confederacy served as the model for the first concepts of federalism, on both of which our own system today is based. It was the indigenous population's support and sharing of knowledge that enabled the earliest European settlers to survive in Canada's harsh environment. We had, and continue to have, much to learn from the first nations people. Their full participation in our national life, and our willingness to respect their culture, can be mutually enriching and beneficial."
"... We have come perilously close to destroying an entire people. It is a testament to the strength of the aboriginal nations and their culture that they have not been broken or assimilated despite all they have endured. But they have paid, and are still paying today, a terrible price for their determination to hold on to their identity."
"...We cannot undo all the harm that was done in the past. But we cannot be the nation we want to be unless we do everything in our power to ensure justice for aboriginal Canadians in the present and the future."

    Jasper Alberta
Jasper is a paradise for lovers of the great outdoors. Its phenomenal location amongst the vast beauty of the Canadian Rockies really helps make it a great destination for all types of travelers.
Jasper joins Banff National Park to the south via the Icefields Parkway. This parkway offers unparalleled beauty as you travel alongside a chain of massive icefields straddling the Continental Divide. The Columbia Icefield borders the parkway in the southern end of the park. Guided tours are available.
Large numbers of elk, bighorn sheep, mule deer and other large animals, as well as their predators make Jasper National Park one of the great protected ecosystems remaining in the Rocky Mountains. This vast wilderness is one of the few remaining places in southern Canada that is home to a full range of carnivores, including grizzly bears, mountain lions, wolves and wolverines.
    Park Highlights
In such a large and spectacular area, there are many sights to see and plenty of stories to be told. A few of the highlights are listed here:
    • The highest mountain in Alberta (Mt. Columbia, 3747 metres)
