Interactions between Plants and Fungi: the Evolution of their Parasitic and Symbiotic Relations
What are Fungi?
Fungi are no plants. They can, just like plants (Plantae) and animals (Animalia), be classified as an original kingdom, that has, like the other two, developed from eucaryotic, single-celled protists (kingdom: Protista). Plants and most fungi share no common homologous structures besides those already conserved at the level of protists. These are: the existence of nuclei, the condensation of DNA with the help of histones, and the presence of actin and tubuline (and thus also of amoeboid movements of cells and of flagellar movements).
These kingdoms do nevertheless share analogies ( convergences, parallel developments ) that are often and wrongly cited as proofs for the relationship of plants and fungi. Three similarities are especially often referred to:
  • Both plant and fungal cells are enclosed by a cell wall while animal cells have no such characteristic. This is true, and cell walls exist in prokaryotes (bacteria, blue-green algae), too. The walls of all three mentioned kingdoms have, nevertheless, different molecular compositions (they contain different molecular classes), their biosynthetic pathways and the way of their cellular growths are different. They are therefore not homologous.

    Algae are photosynthetic organisms that occur in most habitats, ranging from marine and freshwater to desert sands and from hot boiling springs to snow and ice. They vary from small, single-celled forms to complex multicellular forms, such as the giant kelps of the eastern Pacific that grow to more than 60 meters in length and form dense marine forests. Algae are found in the fossil record dating back to approximately 3 billion years in the Precambrian. They exhibit a wide range of reproductive strategies, from simple, asexual cell division to complex forms of sexual reproduction. Algae are important as primary producers of organic matter at the base of the food chain. They also provide oxygen for other aquatic life. Algae may contribute to mass mortality of other organisms, in cases of algal blooms, but they also contribute to economic well- being in the form of food, medicine and other products. In tropical regions, coralline algae can be as important as corals in the formation of reefs. Seaweeds are larger algae that live in the marine (salt or brackish water) environment.     Algae are the plants with the simplest organization. Many of them are single-celled, some have no cell wall, others do though its composition and structure differ strongly from that of higher plants. They are good specimen for tracing back the evolution of the cell wall. Primitive cell walls do not fulfil the same requirements as that of higher plants. It seems quite likely that a structure like that of the cell wall has developed several times in the course of evolution. All archaebacteria, eubacteria and blue-green algae (cyanobacteria or blue-green algae) have complex walls with an energetically rather costly biosynthesis. Neither in composition nor in biosynthesis do they have any common ground with the cell walls of plants. Although the evolution of plants from early eucaryotic cells is not known in detail, is it commonly agreed on that primitive algae are flagellates closely related to the non-green flagellates. Many, though not all species of this stage of evolution, among which the euglenophyta are typical green representatives, have no cell wall. It is not only a simple membrane, but by a pellicle of already quite complex organization, that separates them from the surrounding. It consists mainly of glycoproteins organized in regular patterns the way two-dimensional crystals are. Helical ribs wind round the cell's surface.

    This is a list taken, amongst other things from postings on ALGAE-L , of culture collections that include algae.     A first list of strains was published by Santos & Mesquita (1986) and included 167 taxa (strains and species), mostly isolated from central Portugal. A detailed history of the "Algoteca" can be found in this work. Two supplements were posteriorly added by Santos (1988) and Santos et al. (1993), with 88 and 194 new taxa, respectively. In the present list, a few taxa listed before that died in the meanwhile are therefore not included and some others have their scientific names changed, in accordance with recent literature.
    The ACOI culture collection provides experimental organisms for research and didactic purposes within the Department and other national and international institutions. The cultures are unialgal, mostly not axenic. They will be available by sale or by exchange, whenever required. The price is 1,000 and 2,000 Portuguese escudos for national academic and commercial institutions, respectively. The correspondent prices for international institutions is $18 and $25. Funds received from the sale of cultures are used for maintenance requirements and improvement of the collection. Diligences are being made to enlarge the actual area of the Algoteca, in order to develop also a section for seaweed cultivation.

    A lively and informative Web site featuring images and descriptions of marine algae found at tidepools in California. Species of red, brown and green seaweed are included, with brief descriptions of morphology and habitat. These pages have been compiled by F. Perez, C. Kjeldsen and J. Hughey in the Department of Biology at Sonoma State University in California.
