Construction of a General Algebra
The construction of an algebra depends on its category. The chapters on the individual algebra categories describe this in detail. Here only an overview is given. Let R be ring, n an integer and Q a sequence of n^3 elements of R. This function creates an algebra A of dimension n over R with basis e_1, ..., e_n such that Q contains the structure constants of A, i.e. e_i * e_j = sum a_(ij)^k e_k, where a_(ij)^k is the element in position (i - 1) * n^2 + (j - 1) * n + k of Q. Check: BoolElt Default: true This function creates the associative structure constant algebra A as returned by . By default, the algebra is checked on associativity, but this can be avoided by setting Check := false . We would like to invite you to come to Linz Austria , from Thursday, June 14th, 2001 to Sunday, June, 17th, 2001 to participate in the Workshop on General Algebra and his group at the Johannes Kepler University Linz
Program
The scientific program will start on the university campus in lecture hall HS 7 on Friday, June 15th, at 9:00 a.m., and finish on Sunday, June 17th, at 1:00 p.m. In the evening of Thursday, June 14th, there will be the possibility to check in for the conference in the restaurant ``Klosterhof'', Landstrasse 30, tram stop ``Mozartkreuzung'', in the centre of Linz from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. We plan to have sections on
  • 1. Universal Algebra,
  • 2. Lattice Theory,
  • 3. Computational Methods in Algebra,
  • 4. Algebra and Discrete Mathematics,
  • 5. Classical Algebraic Structures.
There will be no conference fee.
Rooms
We ask you to book your rooms personally, e.g., via the tourist information of Linz. However, there is a certain amount of rooms available at the hotel Sommerhaus-Julius Raab Heim, which is in about 10 minutes' walking distance from the university campus. These rooms should be reserved early (best before March 31st) through our university's room administration service. The price of the double room is ATS 310 (EUR 23) per night and person without breakfast, and ATS 380 (EUR 28) per night and person with breakfast.

This presentation describes methodology, technical solutions and applications for using general purpose computer algebra system Maple in open learning environments. The functionality of Maple and required software components are first briefly presented. This approach is then shortly fitted in a larger scheme of open learning environments. Introduced applications consist two cases using proposed Maple server in mathematics education. The first application delivers straightforward Maple worksheets in the WWW and the second provides methods for rapidly creating complex interactive mathematical exercises using similar approach. Keywords: computer algebra systems, mathematics education, implementing open learning environments. 1 Introduction Building educational tools for mathematics requires various types of knowledge: mathematics, programming, usability and education. It is obvious that instructional systems should successfully combine all these. Good instructional systems (with or without computers) ought to provide students personal and easy ways to build their knowledge using meaningful contents, give motivating goals, accurate feedback and feeling of success.

General Program Information This year, the seminar will be partially funded by a grant from the City University Faculty Development Program . For the Fall semester, the Faculty Development Program will have instructional technology as its main theme. As part of this program, we shall devote a number of special lectures by leading experts in algebraic methods for differential equations, related theory, and applications to computer algebra. These lectures form a research subseries of the Kolchin Seminar in Differential Algebra, which specializes in the mathematical theories behind algorithms for symbolic integration and solving differential equations. Topics this year will include Stokes multipliers and differential Galois groups factorization of differential operators basic model theory mirror symmetry ... elimination theory and automatic reasoning , and more. Some of these lectures will have both an introductory and an advanced section, and we expect lecture notes available from some speakers. This seminar and the Faculty Development Program lectures are open to the public. There is no registration fee. Section 1: General Algebra and Discrete Mathematics
The general framework for the research activities of the Arbeitsgruppe is established by the study of general mathematical structures in the field of algebra and discrete mathematics.
General Algebra in the narrow sense is mainly investigated by Prof. Burmeister (partial algebras), Prof. Wille (General Algebra in connection with Formal Concept Analysis) and by Dr. Ihringer (General Algebra in connection with geometry and group theory). Applications of General Algebra include among other things the theory of abstract data types and deduction in algebraic systems.
Discrete Mathematics is in the Arbeitsgruppe investigated in the context of order and lattice theory, whose applied branch is Formal Concept Analysis. Applications which are an integral part of research, also in interdisciplinary cooperation, include for example the analysis of empirical data and the processing and systematic acquisition of knowledge. The current work is presented in the Forschungsgruppe Begriffsanalyse
A further research area of the Arbeitsgruppe is Mathematical Music Theory . The main goal in this context is the development of an extensional standard language of music theory and its implementation on computer-controlled musical instruments. Further fields of interest are General Mathematics and the philosophy of mathematics.

Although these formulae are fundamental for calculation with numbers, they do not characterize completely the notion of number. Of course, in the different branches of mathematics, the word number is used in different senses. For example, you speak of natural, rational, complex, hyper-complex numbers, etc. The rational numbers as well as the real numbers and the complex numbers form three systems each of which satisfies the above conditions, whereas the system formed by the natural numbers does not satisfy the laws of inverse existence; the reader may verify this statement! On the other hand, in the system formed by all the analytic functions of a complex variable, all the laws mentioned before apply, although the system is not composed of numbers. In this chapter, systems of any kind will be considered, where either all these laws or some of them hold. In general, nothing will be assumed about the nature of the mathematical elements which form these systems. It is essential that the elements are interconnected with the aid of certain operations which obey particular laws. These operations will sometimes be called

Whereas in a field every element is divisible by every element other than zero, there is no corresponding theorem for rings. As certain rings - for example, the ring of the integral numbers, and the rings R x have an important role in mathematics, it is necessary to consider the mutual divisibility of elements of certain classes of rings which are not fields. Let D be an integral domain If every element of D is divisible in D by a particular element, say e, then is divisible by e , and therefore e belongs to D. If on the other hand, e and e belong to D, then for every a of D the elements a e and ae belong to D ; hence every element a of D is divisible by e and e . Thus, the elements which are factors of every element of D are exactly those elements of which an inverse element exists in D. The unit element for instance, has this property, whence these elements are called unities of D.
