KABYLE VILLAGES-CUSTOMSINDUSTRIESEDUCATION THE villages are long and narrow, running along the tops of the crêtes, and extending but a short distance downward. They command a view in all directions. The houses are small, of one storey, made of stone and roofed with tiles. Those on the outside of the town are put up one against another, with no openings towards the outside, thus forming a wall of defence. There is but one street of entrance, and across this, at short intervals, are thrown stone archways, which in former days were provided with heavy doors. At the centre of the villages some of the dwellings have small gardens around them, hedged with prickly pear. The houses consist simply of four walls and the roof, are usually without windows, and besides the door have an opening in the roof. Beneath this is a hollow in the earth lined with stones, which forms the fireplace, the sacred spot of the house, where strangers and friends are received and entertained, cheered by the blaze of roots and branches. In one corner the earth is scooped out so as to form a depression below the level of the rest of the floor. This serves as a stall for young calves or donkeys. In another corner a home-made cradle, consisting of an old piece of burlap strung on two poles, holds the last born of the household, watched over by its grandmother, who is seared and wrinkled enough to be its Berber ancestress.

A nationalist movement began to develop after World War I, and a war for independence, led by the National Liberation Front (FLN), broke out in 1954. After more than seven years of bitter fighting, in which at least 100,000 Muslim and 10,000 French soldiers were killed, Algeria became independent on July 3, 1962.
Since independence, Algeria has been a prominent nonaligned state and a champion of the movements against white minority rule in Africa. It also has supported the protracted struggle of the Polisario Front for the independence of Western Sahara (formerly Spanish Sahara) from Morocco. Ahmed Ben Bella, prime minister and then president of Algeria after independence, was deposed by Houari Boumedienne in 1965.
After Boumedienne's death (1978), Chadli Benjedid succeeded (1979) him as president. Riots in 1988 led Pres. Benjedid to reduce the role of the state economically and of the FLN politically. After Islamic fundamentalists won 42% of the seats in the first round of parliamentary elections in Dec. 1991, the army forced Benjedid to resign (1992) and cancelled the election. A civilian-led state council was installed, but real power resided with the army. The fundamentalist party was banned and its leaders arrested. Fundamentalists launched a guerrilla insurrection, and Algeria was torn by violence from both sides, resulting in an estimated 50,000 deaths by the mid-1990s.

Geography of Arabic Originally located in the Arabian Peninsula, theArabic language was carried to other regions through the expansion of Islam and the Arab conquests See Map1 Before the expansion of Islam, the peoples of the Middle East and North Africa, where Arabic is now the dominant language, spoke a variety of languages, some of which were not even related linguistically to Arabic. See Map 2 The dialectal differences of Arabic have to do with the fact that its expansion was surprisingly fast, so that people speaking different languages adopted Arabic quickly, preserving some sounds and forms of their original languages. THE TYPES OF ARABIC There are three different types of Arabic: Classical Arabic. This is the language in which the Holy Koran is written. Modern Standard Arabic (MSA). This is the modern literary language, which is a modified version of Classical Arabic. It is used only in formal speeches, and in news reports on TV and radio. The creation of a standard form of Arabic is an attempt to facilitate communication among people speaking different dialects. Some Arabs also call this language "Classic" (or Fusha). Colloquial Arabic . This is the spoken language ("ammiya" or "daarij") and it is divided into several dialects

A "republic" was proclaimed in 1958, but in actuality a series of military strongmen have ruled the country since then, the latest being SADDAM Husayn. Territorial disputes with Iran led to an inconclusive and costly eight-year war (1980-88). In August 1990 Iraq seized Kuwait, but was expelled by US-led, UN coalition forces during January-February 1991. The victors did not occupy Iraq, however, thus allowing the regime to stay in control. Following Kuwait's liberation, the UN Security Council (UNSC) required Iraq to scrap all weapons of mass destruction and long-range missiles and to allow UN verification inspections. UN trade sanctions remain in effect due to incomplete Iraqi compliance with relevant UNSC resolutions. Algeria is the second largest country in Africa. In the north the mountain range - the Saharan Tell - is roughly parallel with the Mediterranean coast and is disrupted by valleys and plateaux. To the south of the Saharan Tell is the Saharan Atlas range which roughly defines the divide between arable land to the north and the southern desert. The many important Roman ruins in Algeria are in excellent condition due to the dryness of the desert. TOP
History
In 1830 Algeria became a French colony. 1962 Algeria achieved independence from France after eight years of guerrilla warfare in which one million Algerians died. A brief power struggle followed between moderates and militants ended when Colonel Boumedienne lead the Arme de Liberation to victory. Ben Bella was elected prime minister promising a "revolutionary Arab-Islamic state based on the principles of socialism and collective leadership within Algeria and anti-imperialism abroad. These ideals were quickly put in to practice by landless peasants as they moved onto the land vacated by the French and established cooperative farms to be administered by peasant councils. Nationalisation of major industries proceeded. However the redistribution of land was limited to that which had been French owned, resulting in large estates still owned by rich Algerians. The call for liberation of women particularly frightened these conservative landowners.

Located on the Mediterranean Sea, Algeria is predominantly plateau and desert, with some mountains and a narrow, isolated plains. The climate is arid to semiarid, with mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers. Siroccos or hot, dust/sand laden winds are very common in the summer. Some of the mountainous areas are subject to infrequent but severe earthquakes; mudslides are also a natural hazard. Economy The Algerian economy has a positive record in comparison to its African counterparts, yet the government acknowledges that there is much room for growth and stability. Oil is the key factor in Algeria's more recent economic success. However the sector has contributed little change to the economy as a whole. Despite drawing in a lot of revenue for the country, the oil sector does not contribute positively to employment. As a result, Algeria's primary economic concerns are large-scale unemployment and the need to diversify the economy. While there has been difficulty rejuvenating employment, the government has a number of initiatives underway to diversify the economy such as market diversification and moves to reduce dependence on European traders.

Algeria lies in central North Africa, between Morocco to the west, Tunisia and Libya to the east, Mauritania, Mali and Niger to the south, and the Mediterranean Sea to the north. It is the second biggest country in Africa (after Sudan) and the tenth biggest in the world. The different landscapes and climatic regions of Algeria can be very simply pictured as four parallel bands running across the country from east to west. Secondly, (as you travel southwards) come the peaks and valleys of the Tell Atlas mountain ranges, dropping slightly to an expanse of largely barren plains called the High Plateaus. The third band consists of more mountain chains, rising to the south of the High Plateaus, and forming part of the Saharan Atlas range. Sahara desert which stretches southwards from the Saharan Atlas mountains and covers more than 80 per cent of the country. Here you will find some of the most extreme conditions and spectacular sights on the planet. Algerian geography page Algerian virtual journey home page On the Line home page sv=13;
