L'amour, la fantasia
On the occasion of the publication of L'amour, la fantasia (1985), the first translation in Slovene of a novel by Assia Djebar, the publishing house Mladinska knjiga and City of Women present the work of the Algerian author, film-director and academic. Besides a presentation of the book we will screen her film La Nouba, des femmes du Mont Chenoua (1978) at Slovenska kinoteka.
Assia Djebar
The film La Nouba, des femmes du Mont Chenoua (winner of the FIPRESCI Award at the Venice Film Festival, 1978) takes its title and structure from the "Nouba", a traditional song of five movements. The film mingles narrative and documentary styles to document the creation of women's personal and cultural histories. Returning to her native region 15 years after the end of the Algerian war, Lila is obsessed by memories of the war for independence that defined her childhood. In dialogue with other Algerian women, she reflects on the differences between her life and theirs. In lyrical footage she contemplates the power of grandmothers who pass down traditions of anti-colonial resistance to their heirs. Reading the history of her country as written in the stories of women's lives, Assia Djebar's La Nouba des Femmes du Mont-Chenoua is an engrossing portrait of speech and silence, memory and creation, and a tradition where the past and present coexist.

Her exploration of the various strategies through which Assia Djebar exhumes and rewrites long occulted aspects of Algerian history is of crucial interest. So is her analysis of the difficulty in reconciling historical aberrations with myths of national unity and identity, as exemplified in France's repression of the memory of her Algerian experiences. Anne Donedey's multifaceted, interdisciplinary, both theoretical and textual study thus constitutes a substantial refinement of extant scholarship on postcolonial and transnational narratives. Book Reviews Modern Algeria: The Origins and Development of a Nation By John Ruedy. Indiana University Press, 1992, 290 pp. List: $16.95; AET: $12.95 for one, $16.95 for two. Reviewed by Greg Noakes September/October 1994, Pages 68-69 For the last century and a half, Algeria has been a trendsetter in the Arab world. Many of the political, ideological, economic and cultural currents in 19th and 20th century Arab history have found their most extreme expression in this North African country. When much of the Middle East fell under the imperialist yoke, suffering was greatest in Algeria, which underwent 132 years of intensive French settler colonialism and the near-total suppression of indigenous Algerian society. With the era of Arab independence, Algerians waged one of the longest, and certainly the bloodiest, struggle for freedom in the region. The Algerian war of independence continued for nearly eight years and claimed over a million victims. Independent Algeria has been an international leader in non-aligned politics, a staunch supporter of the Palestinian and other national liberation struggles, a principal architect of the Arab oil embargo after the 1973 Arab-Israeli war, a leading proponent of the state capitalist economic system adopted by a number of Arab countries, and a key interlocutor between the Middle East and the West. Algeria was also one of the first Arab countries to institute a multiparty democratic system with truly free elections. Presently it is the scene of violent conflict between the secular Arab order and the rising tide of Islamism, and thus the subject of considerable international attention.

  • The Politics of Language in Former Colonial Lands: A Comparative Look at North Africa and Central Asia by Edward H Thomas
    • French colonial rule in North Africa and the integration of the Central Asian lands into the Russian/Soviet empire were both characterised not only by substantial European settlement but also by cultural aggression against the Muslim populations of each region, featuring in particular the promotion of the French and Russian languages respectively over locally-used and indigenous languages. This paper examines the similarities and differences in the two experiences and also discusses their post-independence consequences and future prospects.
The Byzantine Era in Tunisia: A Forgotten Footnote? by Richard Edis
    • The Byzantine era in Tunisia has been generally been neglected and underestimated by historians. There is growing evidence that the period was marked by administrative and economic revival and a vigorous religious life. What might have become an autonomous society with a distinctive character independent of Constantinople was snuffed out by the arrival of the Moslem Arabs. However, a distinctive mark was left on Tunisia which merits wider recognition and protection.

So Vast the Prison
by Assia Djebar
ISBN 1 876631 38 4
Publication date: April 2002 "For a long time I believed that writing meant dying..." begins this extraordinary book, the double-threaded story of one woman's existence set against he unforgiving history of her country. So Vast the Prison is the most ambitious work to date by the woman many consider to be North Africa's most important literary voice. The tragedies of Algerian history are its subject, and particularly the condition of women in Islam. Djebar's fiction, like that of Nadine Gordimer and Edna O'Brien, wrestles with issues of oppression and the subtle ways language and history enforce it. So Vast the Prison tells the story of a modern, educated Algerian woman, raised in the years of Colonial oppression and the Algerian War, whose older brother was imprisoned in France. She watches her marriage disintegrate in a society intolerant of women, even as she marvels at the closeness of women among themselves at the ritual baths and in other gatherings. Woven into the woman's personal life story is the ancient history of her land, including the loss of its early languages, the massive destruction suffered in wars of conquest, and the quirks of chance which enabled traces to remain. A radically singular voice; a private tale, embedded in a vast tapestry.

ALGERIA: THE REIGN OF TERROR The Themes of History Under the Star and Crescent
Themes: dynasty, conquest, empire, wealth
The ancient land of Algeria has known many rulers over the centuries. Originally falling under the influence of the powerful empires of Carthage and Rome, the nomadic Berber people who inhabited Algeria were to come under the domination of the Arabs as the Islamic conquest swept westward from Arabia under its star-and-crescent banners, reaching all the way into Spain by 711 A.D. Although they converted to Islam, the Berbers resented the arrogance and high-handedness of their Arab overlords, and embraced a dissident version of the Muslim religion that stressed the equality of all believers and the right of anyone to become caliph (ruler), not just those who could claim direct descent from the prophet Mohammed. Barbary corsairs that prowled the Mediterranean, winning it the grudging respect of its Christian European neighbours, and a series of treaties were negotiated with Holland in 1663, France in 1670, Britain in 1681, and the United States in 1815. By this time, Algeria was also the greatest wheat-producing nation in the Mediterranean region, and was exporting large amounts of grain to Europe. During the French Revolution, the government bought considerable quantities of Algerian wheat, but refused to pay for it. This situation continued during the reign of Napoleon. Finally, in 1827, the exasperated

A History of Decolonization and Transformation by Phillip C. Naylor Order this Book now Features Search UPF home ... Contact us Phillip Naylor describes the extraordinary bilateral relationship between France and Algeria, countries whichafter 132 years of colonialism and a brutal war of independencehave attempted to fashion a new relationship based on "mutual respect."
Beginning with a review of the colonial period up to 1958, Naylor examines the various dramas that have distinguished bilateral relations since independence: the Evian Accords of March 1962, the substitution of cooperation for colonialism, the nationalization of the hydrocarbons sector in 1971, and the Fitna, Algeria’s violent "trial" of itself as a nation during the '90s.
Recognizing many contradictions and complexities in the period of "postcolonial decolonization," Naylor melds philosophy, economics, sociology, political science, and literary criticism into his historical narrative. Readers will find an impressive range of subject matter and methodologies brought to bear on the evolving relations of power, perception, and identity between the two states.
In the voluminous literature covering France’s relationship with Algeria, the bilateral postcolonial history has been marginalized, if not neglected. Naylor offers a widely and deeply researched account of this period, and of the exceptional relationship between France and Algeria as the former continues to ascribe strategic importance to Algeria while the latter struggles to transform and escape the residual influence of its colonial past.
