February '97 - visited general practitioner to test for asthma - referred to neurologist.
February '97 - began to experience sudden and profound weight loss (cachexia).
March '97 - diagnosed with ALS - referred to UCLA for second opinion.
May '97 - Diagnosis of probable ALS at UCLA after 3 EMGs and neurological examination.

Wenn die motorischen Nervenzellen aufgrund von ALS/MND absterben, ist die Fähigkeit des Gehirns, die Muskelbewegungen zu kontrollieren, verloren. Wenn die Muskeln keine Impulse mehr empfangen, werden sie schwächer und bauen sich ab (Atrophie). ALS/MND ist auch unter dem Namen Lou Gehrig's Disease und unter Maladie de Charcot bekannt, nach Jean-Marie Charcot, dem französischen Neurologen, der die Krankheit zum ersten Mal 1869 beschrieb.
