147 Sustainable Agriculture
Statement of Issue:
Iowans remain concerned about profitability, the environment, and the quality of life associated with agriculture. Sixty percent of farmers polled in 1994 believe there is too much reliance on agricultural chemicals in farming, and only 20% felt that their quality of life had improved during the last five years. Sixty-two percent felt that increased use of sustainable farming practices would help maintain the natural resource base. A need exists to provide sustainable agriculture education and training in Iowa. Performance Goals:
Sustainable agriculture is a system of farming which over time encompasses and provides balance to the goals of economic stability, environmental soundness, and social impacts. Social Goals (to target 10,000 Iowans in agriculture, key decision makers, policy makers, and the urban public) 1. Broaden the goals of agriculture by facilitating discourse and improving policy to support a more sustainable agriculture in Iowa
2. Broaden the sense of optimism and a future in agriculture in Iowa. Economic Goals (to target 40,000 Iowans: general public, producers, lenders, and community leaders)

Topics in Sustainable Agriculture Index: The Assault on Alternative Agriculture Statement of Purpose: Needs of Sustainable Agriculture: The Promise of Sustainable Agriculture: ... Links: The Assault on Alternative Agriculture There is a battle waging within agriculture today, a battle that is pitting large segments of agribusiness against the sustainable agriculture movement. Opponents of sustainable agriculture control much of the media and therefore their opinions dominate the debate and the minds of the masses. They assert that if farmers stop using chemicals (that they just happen to produce) the world would starve. They cite biased economic studies, such as the one conducted by Thomas Foster (an agricultural economist for the Tennessee Valley Authority and the National Fertilizer Development Center) in which he claims "Taking chemicals out of agriculture could mean cutting exports in half, 217,000 fewer jobs, rampant inflation, and a huge increase in food costs. . . Yields generally fell in all scenarios while costs per unit of crop increased in all cases." ( Omaha World-Herald 15 November 1990, 19). This type of economic study (even if totally correct) is extremely irresponsible. It is obvious that the conversion away from chemically based agriculture "is a slow, methodical, step-at-a-time procedure"(p.94

Side-by-side comparisons were established at 11 farms in the fall of 1995 in the western San Joaquin Valley region between Huron and Mendota. Each site consisted of adjacent fields: one conventional and one alternative. Project fields were from 30 to 60 ha each. Consensus among participating farmers and researchers was that cover crop and compost or manure amendments would be used in the alternative field sites, but not in the conventional fields. Soil quality index and statistical analyses Researchers compared the alternative and conventional treatment means for six of the 11 farm sites. These six farms maintained treatment integrity and a commitment to the side-by-side comparisons over the course of the project. The expanded data set collected from a seventh farm in 1998 was used to construct the soil quality index (SQI). Techniques used to develop this index were similar to those previously applied in the Sustainable Agriculture Farming Systems (SAFS) project at the UC Davis campus. To construct the index, the researchers performed standardized principal component analysis of the data.
