THE OIL AGE We live in the Oil age, which gives us a higher degree of prosperity than has ever before been achieved. Our houses, our schools, universities, hospitals and transport systems allow most of us to live better than any king in previous ages. Core Concepts The core concepts that should be stressed when teaching about renewable energy sources are: Renewable energy sources include Solar, Wind, Hydroelectric, Biomass, and Geothermal energy. Renewable energy is already cost effective compared to fossil fuels and nuclear energy. In particular, Hydroelectric and properly sited Wind "Farms" are already commercially successful. Solar is still more expensive per watt than fossil fuel but advances in technology are rapidly decreasing the cost. For example, 20 years ago Solar Photovoltaic cells cost nearly $1000 per installed watt. Today, the price is about $4 to $5 and still dropping. It has been projected that at the current rate of advance it will be about $1 per watt by the year 2015. Even when renewable sources are more costly per watt, this does not take into account the hidden pollution cost of fossil fuel. That is a cost that will be paid by future generations. Evidence mounts year by year that green house gasses are raising the temperature of the earth. The economic impact of such global climate changes are not possible to calculate. Besides green house gasses, other fossil fuel pollution has been shown to increase rates of asthma and other respiratory diseases, and even cancer.

I live in the woods far away from utility power lines, but I wouldn't hook up even if the utility company offered to bring power to my house for free. I have lived with an alternative energy system for years and watched the quality rise and cost of system components drop slowly but surely. And anywhere in between. It all depends on how much you can afford to spend.
