Student Organizations:
Building Community and Capabilities
Their names are different, and there are many more today than there were in years past, but their goals endure. Student organizations at the Medical College of Wisconsin continue to develop community, enhance skills, and build a foundation for future leadership. Making connections
In addition to providing a social outlet, AKK helped orient incoming freshmen when Although AKK is gone now, many other organizations many of the functions AKK did and more. , remembered those functions from her days as PDE pledge-class (first-year) president. She and her peers conducted tours for incoming students, raised food and funds for Second Harvest Food Bank, hosted applicants, called alumni during the phonathon, and provided an aerobics program as well as social activities for students. Return to Top Developing capabilities
“They also cultivate the skills involved in collaboration" Murray said. "Until now, so much of our focus as medical students has involved qualities that lead to individual achievement. We’re more likely to sit down and solve problems ourselves. But by serving in student organizations, I’ve had to improve my ability to work in a group, balance multiple roles, delegate and make sure the needs of others are being met.”

Alumni Council College Relations Group Report on the Trustee Student Life Initiative
June 30, 1999
The report of the Alumni Council College Relations Group summarizes alumni response to the Student Life Initiative (SLI). The report is divided into two main sections: general alumni perspectives on the SLI, gathered between February and May, 1999; and Alumni Council input, gathered during the Council's spring meeting, May 20-22, 1999. General alumni feedback came from a variety of sources: the College's web site; the CRG's own e-mail address; letters; and telephone calls. This response can be characterized as reaction to early published statements from the College, press coverage, and electronic communications among the alumni network. The Alumni Council, in its deliberations, had the opportunity to listen and speak to trustees, administrators, students and each other, and in this sense became much better educated than the general alumni population about the SLI.
