Alzheimer's disease - the dementia. Recently there have been some important breaks through to possible treatments of Alzheimer's-type dementia. Alzheimer's disease remains the greatest scourge of the elderly after heart disease and stroke. Despite the possibilities of effective treatments for Alzheimer's disease in the forseeable future, this glimmer of hope comes too late for millions of people throughout the world. For them, their prime need is and will remain their quality of care. Nursing Homes are over-burdened with dementia sufferers, particularly those with Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimers disease is now known to be a group of dementias and not just one single disorder Some nursing homes are still not properly equipped or trained to deal with the special needs of people with Alzheimer's disease. There is still too much ignorance of what Alzheimer's disease IS, and ignorance breeds fear and prejudice. Alzheimer Updates

Information on Alzheimers Disease (AD) and Sundowning
This is a collection of abstracts from published research which relate to circadian rhythms and phototherapy (light therapy) and Alzheimer's disease. - Light therapy research is continuing all the time. This is a snapshot of some of the results to date. By inclusion here we do not claim that the authors endorse our products specifically.
SUMMARY
The common thread is that the organic progress of the disease results in damage to a part of the brain ( the Suprachiasmatic Nucleus or SCN) which controls body clock or circadian rhythms, but by using bright light (also known as phototherapy ) the disruption to the normal circadian rhythms can be reduced, making it more likely that the patient will be able to fit in with the normal daily sleep-wake cycle.

Alzheimer's Disease Cause for HOPE at last!
Alzheimer's disease is devastating not only to the patient but also to the patient's loved ones who must sit by almost helplessly as the disease slowly takes its relentless course. Family and friends watch, often for years, as the patient deteriorates both mentally and physically. There are tremendous emotional costs involved. There are equally devastating medical and care costs. Is there any hope on the horizon? A. The BAD news: We do not as of yet know the cause(s) of Alzheimer's disease. There isn't even a definitive way to accurately diagnose the condition while the patient is still alive. This, unfortunately, can only be done by studying the brain post-mortem at autopsy. And there is no treatment. There is no prevention. There is no cure. B. The GOOD news: Researchers around the world are working at a furious pace on all aspects of Alzheimer's disease. Many of the underlying genetic and pathological features are being elucidated. Ante-mortem diagnosis is getting much better. Dr. Peter Seubert, writing in the

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive, irreversible disorder that attacks the brain and results in memory loss, confusion, impaired judgment, personality changes, and the ability to care for one's self. With over 500,000 Californians affected by this illness, it is the most common cause of severe intellectual impairment in older individuals and a primary reason for the placement of the elderly in nursing homes. At present, it is not known what causes Alzheimer's disease or how to prevent or cure it. However, there is often much that can be done to reduce symptoms, improve functioning and aid the family in caring for the patient at home. It is also important to remember that not all memory problems are due to Alzheimer's disease. Since many of the other memory problems can be improved or even cured, it is important to seek an evaluation by a physician. In addition, research funding is provided to scientists engaged in the study of Alzheimer's disease and related disorders through the

Certain Foods May Help Prevent Alzheimers Disease
(New York-WABC, June 25, 2002) There is no cure for Alzheimer's disease, but it appears certain foods may help prevent it. Now, ABC7's Dr. Jay Adlersberg is On Call with the details. Scientists believe that up to four million Americans suffer from the brain-deteriorating disease known as Alzheimer's. This number is also growing as the population ages. We don't fully understand the causes, and although medication can help delay it there is no drug or vaccine to prevent it. Today, however, there is an interesting medical study to tell you about. In tomorrow's "Journal of the American Medical Association," scientists present a study that provides the most direct evidence between diet and preventing Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Martha Clare Morris, Rush Presbyterian-St. Lukes Medical Center: "We did find that there was this significant reduction in Alzheimers disease from Vitamin E intake from food sources."
