Using music to teach English is not new. Songs with lyrics provide language and content for activities that build listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills while providing cultural information. See the NCLE digest on Using Music In the Adult ESL Classroom for more information. Using music to combine language and civics teaching is easy, fun, provides great opportunity for community-building and multicultural sharing, and can be used at many levels.

This preschool and kindergarten song is from Marilyn G . who says, "E xemplify unity through song and help children understand that even though we may be different, we are the same in many ways. Send Dr. Martin Luther King's message to others." Description: This is a song but it could be learned as a poem. It was written by a former preschool teacher, Esther Yost , of Ann Arbor,Mi., about 15 years ago: I have a dream, said Martin Luther King
We're gonna make that dream come true.
Let freedom ring, said Martin Luther King,

We are now accepting docent applications for fall of 2000. D OCENT: teacher or lecturer. The word derives from a Latin root meaning to teach. For the past one hundred years, docents in American museums have been a living link between museum collections and the public. Docents lead visitors toward a deeper understanding of museum artifacts and the history, people, and stories behind them. If you are interested in joining this dynamic, motivated group and providing an indispensable service to thousands of visitors as a Museum docent, we welcome your application.
In the "Ceremonial Court" exhibition, a docent fills in visitors on some of the White House escapades of President Theodore Roosevelt's children.
A docent at one of the interpretive carts explains how a Victrola works.
In the Museum's two popular learning centers, docents encourage people of all ages to explore history with their hands and minds. Visitors to the Hands On History Room can assemble a Chippendale chair, operate a telegraph, uncover the story behind the imagery in a buffalo-hide painting, and participate in more than thirty other activities. Removing DNA from cells, testing for food additives, and measuring radioactive hot spots are just a few of the activities that docents facilitate in the Hands On Science Center.
Q UALIFICATIONS The Museum's Docent Program is open to men and women twenty-one years of age or older who can communicate with the general public, successfully complete required training, and commit one day per week for the weekday program or two days per month for the weekend program. For weekday docents, core training requires two days per week for six weeks. Weekend docents meet on consecutive Saturdays and some Wednesday evenings. All core training sessions are in the fall. Training sessions are mandatory. Applicants are considered docent-candidates until they successfully complete training.

Celebrate Black History!
Black history and culture is such a part of the American fabric and the school curriculum that it's difficult to imagine a time when that wasn't so. Established as Negro History Week in the 1920's by Carter G. Woodson, February was chosen for the celebration because Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln were born in this month. Extended to a month-long celebration in 1976, Black History Month is an opportunity to emphasize the history and achievements of African Americans. LESSON PLANS Famous African-American Fabric Portraits
Doris Metcalf, who recently retired from the Florence (Alabama) City Schools, submitted this lesson, in which students create a fabric-portrait exhibit of famous African Americans. (Grades 6-12) Five Lessons in Black History
Primary source materials teach about Rosa Parks, school integration, and the growth of the African-American population throughout history. Plus: Students create a database/timeline and write a rap about a famous figure in Black History. More! A Black History Treasure Hunt

In 1925, Carter G. Woodson, an educator and historian began campaigning among schools, journals and black newspapers calling for a 'Negro History Week' to be celebrated. This would honor the importance of black achievement and contribution in the United States. He was able to institute this 'Negro History Week' in 1926 during the second week of February. This time was chosen because Abraham Lincoln's and Frederick Douglass' birthdays occurred then. Woodson was awarded the Springarn Medal from the NAACP for his accomplishment. In 1976, Negro History Week turned into Black History Month which we celebrate today. Read more about
